I Haven’t Been Reading My Bible

Written with love by Betty Strickland

I had the privilege of staying with my Papa Moore for a week one summer when my aunt

Euella went on a well earned vacation. But, I am convinced I had the better end of that deal!

Papa and I would stay up into the night talking and me learning things I had not heard before.

Like, when he and Mama Moore married, when he was road commissioner of Prentiss County,

Mississippi and so on. The most remembering story was how they used to go to “brush arbor”

meetings. He said on one certain night this preacher spoke very plain and knowingly. Well, after

the close of the preaching, Papa said he went up to the preacher and asked “What church are

you a member of?” The preacher would not give a name but answered, “The one you may read

about in the Bible.” Well, dear Papa went home and started reading his Bible, then....obeyed the

gospel of our Lord. He and Mama Moore started their life of service to God from that day

forward. How did Mama and Papa KNOW what to do to “obey the gospel”? How did they KNOW

what to do to SERVE the Lord? The answer to that is really simple, they studied. Papa was 91 or

92 years old at that time and he read his Bible every day and said he LEARNED something new

every day. He had been an elder of the church in Marietta, MS for 40 years when he passed from this life to his home in heaven.2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not

to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. This is a COMMAND to all Christians! I know

there may be time when it is not convenient, or “too many irons in the fire” so to speak. But,

please stop to think...where would we be if Jesus had been to busy or too occupied to go to the

cross of Calvary for you and me?These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with

all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. (Acts

17:11) They did not take a preacher’s word for what they heard, but made SURE if it was in

accordance with God’s Word. Do you want to be remembered as a “Berean” or one from

Thessalonica?

I moved back to Mississippi one time after I had been driving (in Georgia) for about 10 years.

Well, as you know you have to change drivers licenses when you change states. So off I go to

take my test, thinking, “It can’t be much different from GA”. My first mistake, for like Naaman, in(2 Kings 5:11a) But Naaman was wroth, and went away, and said, Behold, I thought.......

Needless to say, I failed. So I got a book, went home and studied, went back two weeks later and

passed. (“When all else fails, read the instructions”). Now, this second chance for my driver’s

license, although somewhat embarrassing, is nothing to the one and ONLY “test” (if you will allow

me to use that phrase) we have to face after our life on earth is finished. The only chance we

have to “read the instruction book (Bible)” is while we are still on the upper side of the grass. And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: (Hebrews 9:27) No

second chance here.

In Matthew 28:19 “ Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name

of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:” and Mark 16:15 “And he said unto them,

Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”Teach what, Lord? - (Matthew 28:20) Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I

have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

And (Mark 16:16) and He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be

damned. Well, how can one accomplish this without KNOWING what to “teach” and how to “baptize”? The

only way is to read and STUDY the Book.

Set a goal or prepare a plan. Study by reading book by book or a subject, (ie. church, baptism, how to

worship and so on). Remember the Bible was written in letter form, not in chapters and verses. Learn to use

your “middle column reference” or a concordance to follow a line of thought. Use the blank pages to record

scriptures you want to remember, like the plan of salvation - Hear the gospel: Romans 10:13-17; Believe -

John 3:16; Confess Jesus Christ as the Son of God - Matt. 3:6; Repent of sins - Luke 13:3,5; Be Baptized -

Romans 6:3,4; Walk in newness of life - Romans 6:4-6; Remain faithful - Rev. 2:10.

I have made charts and printed them on large label pages (sticky on back) and stuck them onto the

pages that are added to my Bible that man “added”.Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do

these things, ye shall never fall: (2 Peter 1:10).

GOD HEARS HIS HOLY PRIESTHOOD

Beth Johnson

“Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ” (1 Pet. 2:5).

Several metaphors are used to show the relationship between Jesus and His church or the “called out” ones.  We often read of Jesus as the Good Shepherd with Christians being His sheep.  We are children with God as our father and Jesus as our older brother.  We are God’s husbandry and his building (1 Cor. 3:9), Christ’s household (Heb. 3:6).  Other analogies speak of Jesus as the vine and His disciples as the branches (John 15:1-5).  The church is called His body (1 Cor. 12:12-27; Eph. 2:22-23; Eph. 3:6; Eph. 4:4-16; Col. 1:18), with Jesus being the head of that body.  Scriptures are replete with lessons about the kingdom (Matt. 13:38-42; Mark 9:1; Mark 14:25; Luke 17:20-21; John 3:3-5; Acts 1:3) with Jesus being the King of that kingdom.  A deeper study of the church would reveal about ten such metaphors with each comparison given to help us see our position or relationship to each other, to God and to Jesus.

Focusing on the temple analogy, we see Christ is the chief corner stone (Eph. 2:20-22; 1 Pet. 2:6-9), and we are “lively stones” in that one temple (1 Pet. 2:5; 1 Cor. 3:9-11; 1 Cor. 3:16; 1 Cor. 6:19; Rev. 3:12), while the apostles are the foundation (Isa. 28:16; Eph. 2:19-22; Rev. 21:14).  We are called “living or “lively” stones” in His holy temple.  Under the Old Testament Law, the stones of a building had to be cleansed if they became “infected” to be sure the whole building was not polluted (Lev. 14:34-57).  In a similar way today we cleanse the “living stones” of the spiritual temple (the church) or deliver them to Satan for the benefit of the whole congregation (1 Cor. 5:1-7; 2 Cor. 7:12).  We must purge out the leaven (sin) so the whole building/temple/body comprised of other living stones can be saved.

Christians also serve as His holy priesthood (1 Pet. 2:9), and it is our duty to offer up spiritual sacrifices (Psa. 50:14; Psa. 50:23; Psa. 141:2; John 4:23-24; Rom. 12:1; Heb. 13:15-16), because this is acceptable to God by Jesus Christ (Phil. 1:11; Phil. 4:18; Col. 3:17; 1 Pet. 4:11).  Using the analogy of a royal priesthood, we see our relationship to our own High Priest.  First of all, the priests in the Old Testament, chosen from the tribe of Levi (specifically the sons of Aaron), were continually serving God in the temple, and He dealt with them there (Num. 3:3-10; 2 Chro. 13:10; 2 Chro. 26:18; Luke 1:5-23).  Today, we are a holy priesthood, a chosen people of God (Rom. 8:28-29; 1 Cor. 1:27-29; Eph. 1:3-5; James 2:5; 1 Pet 2:9), and we serve Him in much the same way Aaron’s sons served under the Old Covenant except that our sacrifices are mainly spiritual rather than physical (John 4:24).

As priests, we not only have a right to pray directly to God, but it is our duty to pray as part of our spiritual sacrifice (Heb. 13:15).  Like the priests in the Old Testament temple, our prayers are heard because we have authority to go to God directly (John 16:23; Eph. 2:18).  We are priests of the true tabernacle which the Lord pitched (Heb. 8:2; 9:11; 9:22-24) and Jesus is our high priest (Heb. 2:17-18; Heb. 3:1).

“Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.  For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.  Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need” (Heb. 4:14-16).

PROTECTING OUR PURITY

Beth Johnson

In Old Testament scripture, not one story of sexual relations outside of marriage has a happy ending.  Shame is heaped upon the parties that willfully participated in fornication.  Lot’s daughters chose wrongfully to their shame and thus brought about two nations who were at odds with Israel (Gen. 19:30-38).  Sarah encouraged Abraham to take a second wife and it brought about strife within the family and brought about another nation that would trouble God’s chosen people forever (Gen.16).  Shechem fell in love with Dinah, the daughter of Jacob.  He took her and had relations with her outside the bond of marriage.  This act brought about his death and that of his father and all of the men of his city (Gen. 34).  One widely known story is the one of King David with Bathsheba.  He saw her; he wanted her, and he took her.  The end result was a man murdered and child which died before his time (2 Sam. 11:1-12:23). I could go on and on.  God makes it clear from the beginning that the sexual relationship is a special one that should be treated as such.

Read Deut. 22:13-21.

1. Were the woman and her parents to be prepared to defend her claim of purity (Deut. 22:15-17)?

2. Once false charges were proven to be false, was the husband allowed to do this to her again at some time in the future (Deut. 22:18-19)?

3. If the charges were proven to be true, what would happen to the woman (Deut. 22:20-21)?

          Why?

          What did this accomplish?

Read Deut. 22:22-30

4. What would happen to a man and a married woman found having relations together (Deut. 22:22)?

          What did this accomplish?

5. If a man finds an engaged girl in the city, and lies with her what is to be done with them (Deut. 22:23-24)?

          Why?

          What does this accomplish?

6. If a man finds an engaged girl out away from the city, forces her and lies with her, what will happen to them (Deut. 22:25-27)?

What is this compared to in verse 26?

Was there any sin in her in this instance?

7. Does God make a distinction between the woman who tries to stop such a thing but is unable to find help and the woman who could have found help and did not seek it?

8. If a man finds a virgin girl, who is not engaged, and lies with her, what should happen to them (Deut. 22:28-29)?

Having started their relationship this way, can he ever put her away?

There are protections given for the woman who does NOT choose to have relations outside of marriage.  When she makes the choice to violate that purity, she is condemned to death.  There’s no comment about how many times she has done such a thing for her to be said to have “played the harlot”.  One time, by choice outside the bonds of marriage, is the same as many times and results in being a called a harlot.  God puts a great value on our purity.  He condemns men who will take it away forcefully, and He condemns the woman who willingly gives it away.

The Shulammite woman in Song of Solomon called herself a “wall” (Song of Solomon 8:10).  Her brothers said “We have a little sister, and she has no breasts; what shall we do for our sister on the day when she is spoken for?  If she is a wall, we will build on her a battlement of silver; but if she is a door we will barricade her with planks of cedar” (Song of Solomon 8:8-9).

Until she’s of age, they will build up her defenses.  If she’s already a sturdy wall, they will supplement that.  But if she’s a door, then they will board her up with strong boards.  When she was older (“my breasts were like towers”) she called herself a wall.  She protected herself.  Her breasts were not welcome signs, they were towers.  Towers on buildings are designed to keep people out and make it hard to get to the top.  She protected herself after it was no longer her brothers’ responsibility.

Tamar kept her head when in a frightening and distressing circumstance (2 Sam. 13:1-23).  She did everything she could to prevent what Amnon intended.  She knew that no matter how much he said he loved her (2 Sam. 13:1) if he did this before making her his wife, he was disgracing them both (2 Sam. 13:11-13).  His true desires were shown after he violated her.  He could still have married her, but he threw her away without any compassion at all.  This was an even greater disgrace and misuse of Tamar (2 Sam. 13:15-16).  She valued her purity; he did not.

There are many places to go study this topic—Proverbs 5 is all about avoiding the pitfalls of fornication and adultery.  Just because it’s written to a male does not mean that the same principles do not apply to a female!

Proverbs 6:20-7:27 is much the same as chapter 5.  Wise King Solomon obviously saw the dangers of the flesh as something to drive home to his student!  The one committing adultery is compared to a thief.  If you know it’s wrong to steal a candy bar from a store, then you should also know that it’s wrong to take away from a married woman what is rightfully hers – her husband’s attention (1 Cor. 7:1-5).

Remember Philippians 4:8-9: “Finally brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy – meditate on these things. The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do and the God of peace will be with you.”

And James 3:16-18, “For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.  But, the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.  Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.”

Temptations stay furthest away when you’re too busy doing good to give the temptation any time to fester in your heart.

·       “Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body” (1 Cor. 6:18).

·       “Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart” (2 Tim. 2:22).

·       “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you” (James 4:7).

Lord, Teach Us To Pray

"And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples" (Luke 11:1).

While Jesus was praying, Luke took notice that He prayed often. He records Jesus praying at his baptism (Luke 3:21); in the wilderness (Luke 5:16); before the appointment of the apostles, when He continued all night in prayer (Luke 6:12); praying alone (Luke 9:18); and praying before His transfiguration (Luke 9:28-29).

Do we automatically know how to pray just because we understand there is a command to do so? Is there a right and a wrong way to pray? Notice the prayer in 1 Kings 8:54 where Solomon assumed a certain physical position. Is this what the disciples were asking about? Are we always to be on our knees with our hands spread up to heaven? Should we beat our breasts like the sinner in Luke 18:13? Will that make our Heavenly Father hear our prayers?

In Matthew 6:9, we see that Jesus taught his disciples to pray a certain way, but that did not include a particular body position. He taught the words to speak to our Heavenly Father, words which addressed Him reverently and humbly. If we are going to ask the Lord to teach us to pray so that He will hear, we need to notice several instances in scripture where God heard prayers and why.

King David prayed often, and in Psalms 10:17 we see one reason why God might have listened to his prayer. He prepared his heart and humbled himself before God. Again in Psalms 19:14, David says, "Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer." Are we concerned with our words when we pray?

Not only are we supposed to be concerned to pray with proper words to use in prayer, but we need to know there are certain things we should pray for.

The apostle James (James 4:2-3) said, "Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts."

We may assume from the account that Luke and the other disciples had been struck with the excellence and fervor of Jesus' prayers and, remembering that John the Baptist had taught his disciples to pray, they asked Jesus also to teach them. From their experience and testimony we learn:

1. That the abilities and fervor of Jesus (or Paul) should lead us to desire the same.

2. That the true method of praying can be learned only by our being properly taught. Consider that we cannot pray acceptably at all unless God is our teacher.

3. That it is proper for us to meditate beforehand what we are to ask of God, and to arrange our thoughts, so that we may not come casually into His presence.

We learn from the testimony of James that we must not ask God for things to satisfy our fleshly desires. We must ask for what God has promised He will give so that we may grow spiritually and be the best we can be.

Peter Reminds Us of
Sodom
and Gomorrah

Written with love by Betty Strickland

"And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an EXAMPLE to those who afterward would LIVE UNGODLY;" (2 Peter 2:6).

The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah and the cites of the plains was so great there is no evidence of their being there other than white ash that showed up on satellite in contrast to the grayish brown of the desert surrounding it.  According to some geologist that have investigated it, the ash is three feet deep:  This area is located in what is now Jordan, southeast of the Dead Sea.

Further research revealed the fire that destroyed these cites is thought to have reached 9,000 degrees Fahrenheit.  Have you ever touched an electric stove burner accidentally?  As hot as that was, it can not compare to the fire and brimstone that rained down on these cites of the plain.

What could these people have done that was so bad that God would send such destruction raining down on them?  Let's go back to Genesis, the 19th chapter (Genesis 19); and see if we can find out.  Two of the angels that had visited Abraham, in chapter 18 (Genesis 18), arrive in Sodom where Abraham's nephew, Lot, lived.  When they arrived there, Lot saw them coming and immediately invited them to come into his house to stay.  They agreed after Lot impressed on them it probably would not be safe to stay out side.  So then in verse 5 we see why - "And they called to Lot and said to him, "Where are the men who came to you tonight?  Bring them out to us that we may know them carnally"(Genesis 19:5).

"See now, I have two daughters who have not known a man; please, let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them as you wish; only do nothing to these men, since this is the reason they have come under the shadow of my roof."  (Genesis 19:8)

Lot tried to reason with the men of Sodom, to no avail.  The angels had to save Lot by pulling him back into the house and striking the men outside with blindness.  In the morning, the angel took Lot, his wife and two daughters by the hand and led them out of Sodom, so they would not be destroyed also.  They warned them, "do not even look back."  Oh, but Mrs. Lot had to look back and was turned into a pillar of salt.

Lessons we can learn for this:

1. Once out of a sin soaked place in life - "DON'T LOOK BACK!"  As we are told in (Luke 17:32)  "Remember Lot's wife".

2. The sins of Sodom and Gomorrah are very grievous to God; and if we practice any of the sins of those of that time, our destruction will surely be just as bad as it was for them.  Only this destruction will never have an ending.

"But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death."  (Revelation 21:8)

"Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire.  This is the second death.   And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.(Revelation 20:14-15)

If you are living in any of the sins listed above - GET OUT!

"And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you.  It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire." (Matthew 18:9)

How do we get rid of such things that will keep us out of heaven and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead and the ruler over the kings of the earth? "To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood," ) (Revelation 1:5b). "And now why are you waiting?  Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.'" (Acts 22:16).

LOVE YOUR HUSBAND

written by Beth Johnson

Why do young women have to be taught to love their husbands?  "The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed" (Tit. 2:3-5).

Every man and wife knows the initial joy of physical love in the marriage bond. Obviously, however, there is more to a Christian relationship than just the physical.  When their life's journey is completed there should be a more beautiful picture of an old man and an old woman finishing the pathway together. Their hands may be gnarled and wrinkled but should still hold a loving touch.  Their bodies may be weary and frail, but their spiritual hearts should be strong. The aged Christian couple will have proved the joys and fulfilled the purpose of marriage.  They will have vindicated it from the jeers of cynics.  "Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge" (Heb. 13:4).

God's kind of love is not like the world's love, but is based on a higher standard (1 Cor. 13:4-7).  His love is not based on emotions.  His love fills the spiritual heart and is trained to do the right things.  It suffers long, is kind, does not envy and does not vaunt itself.  God's love is not puffed up and does not behave itself unseemly.  Love does not seek her own, is not easily provoked and thinketh no evil.  Love does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in truth.  Love bears all things, hopes all things and endures all things!  Are we born knowing how to love?  No!  This kind of love must come by study, training and teaching.  We have to learn to love God's way.

Before young women consider marriage relationships, they need to ponder the paths their marriages will take, consider the Lord's purpose for marriage (1 Cor. 7:2; Eccles. 4:9-12) and study about who should get married (1 Cor. 7:9).  They need to know the difference between those married and those who are not (1 Cor. 7:7, 17, 28) and understand their duty to the mate and toward God (1 Cor. 7:1-5).  They should be concerned about how to please the mate, without loving the things of the world (1 Cor. 7:32-34. 1 John 2:15).

The basic duties of every Christian wife may be summed up in a few words (Tit. 2:3-5).  Wives, young and old, are to take care of food and clothing for the whole family, guard the home, fulfill the duty of marriage and be concerned with pleasing the husband according to God's commandments.  Learning how to accomplish that should be the focus of her training so as not to cause shame to the family of God or to the Heavenly Father Himself.

Be Faithful Until Death

Written with love by Betty Strickland

"Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life." (Revelation 2:10)

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier has been paroled since the 1930's. In 2003, it was reported on ABC news, that as hurricane Isabella was approaching Washington, DC, our Us Senate/House took two days off in anticipation of the storm. The military members assigned to guard the tomb were given permission to suspend the patrol. They respectfully declined the offer stating, "It was the highest honor that can be afforded to a serviceperson."

Our highest honor is to "Be faithful unto death", and He will give us the crown of life. This, like the soldiers patrolling the tomb of the unknown soldier in a hurricane, is 'to the point of death'. If we are threatened with death and deny the Lord or are unfaithful in any way without repentance, we will not receive that glorious crown of life.

First of all, to even get our names written there, we MUST be "in Christ". Galatians 3:27 - "For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ."  Philippians 4:3 - "And I urge you also, true companion, help these women who labored with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the Book of Life."

But, please, remember that just because our names have been written there in the Book of Life, if one goes back into a sinful life, their name will be "blotted out". Revelation 3:5, "He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels."

In the hymnal "Songs of The Church" on page 219, there is a song titled, "Lord, I Care Not For Riches", written by Mrs. Mary A. Kidder / Frank M. Davis. A couple of the verses go like this:

Lord, I care not for riches, Neither silver nor gold;

I would make sure of heaven; I would enter the fold;

In the book of Thy kingdom, With its pages so fair;

Tell, me Jesus, my Savior, Is my name written there?

He has certainly told us what MUST be done for our name to be written there and to keep it there!

Second Verse:

Lord, my sins they are many, Like the sands of the sea;

But Thy blood, O my Savior, Is sufficient for me;

For Thy promise is written, In bright letters that glow;

Tho' your sins be as scarlet, I will make them like snow.

Isaiah wrote many centuries ago - "Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the LORD, “ Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool. If you are willing and obedient, You shall eat the good of the land; But if you refuse and rebel, You shall be devoured by the sword”; For the mouth of the LORD has spoken." (Isaiah 1:18 -20)

We need to know HOW to wash away those sins, and we can read that in Acts 22: 10- 16, "So I said, ‘What shall I do, Lord?’ And the Lord said to me, ‘Arise and go into Damascus, and there you will be told all things which are appointed for you to do.’  And since I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of those who were with me, I came into Damascus.
“Then a certain Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good testimony with all the Jews who dwelt there, came to me; and he stood and said to me, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight.’ And at that same hour I looked up at him. Then he said, ‘The God of our fathers has chosen you that you should know His will, and see the Just One, and hear the voice of His mouth.  For you will be His witness to all men of what you have seen and heard.  And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’
"

So, we see our sins are "Washed away" in baptism, like Saul did; and later he became the great apostle to the Gentiles, Paul.

If we do not submit to the Lord in baptism, our names are not written in the book of life").  If you have submitted ...Be Faithful Until Death!

Get Prepared for Every Good Work

By Janice Taylor

"Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.” But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor. Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work." (2 Timothy 2:19-21)

Today's text is one of the most comforting verses in the scriptures for the faithful Christian. The foundation God laid was Christ. In Isaiah 28:16 we read the prophecy, "Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: " Behold, I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation, A tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation; Whoever believes will not act hastily." I did a little research on that phrase, 'act hastily' and found it to mean that one who believes will not be afraid of what will happen, be dismayed or in a panic. A person, who puts their trust in that stone, will not be shaken. In 1 Corinthians 3:11, we see the fulfillment pointed out, "For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ."

When something was "sealed," it was to prove or confirm and authenticate a document or to prove one's testimony to the fact that he was who he claimed to be. In 2 Timothy 2:19a God said, "Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: "The Lord knows those who are His," and we can rest assured that Christ does know His followers. In John 10:27-28 we read, "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand."

"Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity." We are warned to leave sin behind us. The Christian does not immerse himself in a worldly life; he stands strong in the faith and is a light to those around him.

"But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor. Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work." There are many faithful and hardworking soldiers of Christ who are those cherished vessels of gold and silver in the great house of the Lord. There are, however, other vessels mentioned in this verse. They are the vessels of Christians who have left their first love and have drifted from the fold. That can be so discouraging for the faithful brethren to see. There are others, who for whatever reason, have begun to preach and teach doctrinal error. Their vessels have become tainted and polluted. This should not cause us to lose hope. God tells us, here, that they can be cleansed! Brothers and sisters who have forsaken the Lord's body are lost until they come to the realization of what they are doing and return to the fold. Paul says if that unfaithful brother or sister "cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work." I find that to be a great comfort to know we can continue to admonish and pray for those who have strayed, and they can return to being a pure vessel in the kingdom prepared for every good work.

Teaching and Admonishing one Another through Song

By Sarah Leland

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord." (Colossians 3:16)

This passage in Colossians provides us with some very specific instructions for what singing in worship is to accomplish. First of all, we see that our audience as we sing is very specific … to the Lord.  I should sing only to please my God in heaven. As my goal is to please Him, I should seek to do it God's way.

Keeping in mind that our audience is in heaven, this verse points out that our singing has another purpose and that is to teach and admonish one another.

According to Strong's Dictionary, the word here for admonish means, "to put in mind, i.e. (by implication) to caution or reprove gently:"1

How can I teach and admonish by my singing?

"God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." (John 4:24)

1. I can teach God's truths and caution or reprove gently through my example as I sing in spirit.

God instructs us to worship Him with the right spirit or attitude (John 4:24).  In order to worship God properly, I must do my best to remove distractions.

If I have small children, I cannot totally remove the distractions which they cause. Babies need to be fed; they dirty their diapers at random moments and, at times, cry. If we are older and have physical difficulties, we cannot completely remove the distraction of pain.

However, we can prepare ourselves to worship and find ways to minimize the distractions in our lives. If I have small children or babies, I try to be sure that their needs are met before the worship begins (such as feedings and bathroom trips). I can also bring books to help occupy young children and babies so that I may focus on worship. Removing the distraction which children cause is not always possible; but as we grow with our children, this will come more easily. Beginning when they are very young, we should be teaching our children that worship is something important which requires our focus and our attention, so that they will know how to worship as well.

There are other things we can do to remove our own personal distractions. We can sit near the front, if this helps remove the distractions which others cause. We can be sure that lunch is completely ready, so we are not worried about it through the worship. We can go to bed early on Saturday night, so that we are not fighting sleep as we worship. By doing my best to worship without being distracted, I am teaching my children and others by my example that this is how God wants to be worshipped; and I am admonishing others gently to do the same.

2. I can teach God's truths and caution or reprove gently through the words of the songs as I sing in truth.

Not only must I have and teach the right attitude in worship to God, but I must also teach what is right (John 4:24).

"And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him." (Colossians 3:17)

I must have God's authority for what I sing. The words that I sing should be teaching and admonishing others around me. For example:

There's a Great Day Coming … teaches God's truth of the Judgment Day and the dividing of all souls, and it admonishes the hearers to be ready.

Ring out the Message … teaches God's truth that there is a message for those lost in sin, and it admonishes the hearers to share that message with others.

God is calling the Prodigal … teaches that God is a loving Father and wishes for His lost children to return, and it admonishes His unfaithful children to come back without delay.

The songs in the songbooks are not inspired (unless they are quotes from Bible passages). According to Colossians 3:16, we must give careful thought to each song, to be sure:

A) That it teaches and/or admonishes, and

B) That what it teaches is right.

If I am going to teach and admonish through singing, I must be singing. This statement may seem redundant; however, it is important. Thus, listening to a choir is not pleasing to God. Worship is a gift to God … not only of my time … but also of me. In worship, I give my attention, my heart, my time and my best … four of the most precious gifts on this earth. Through my gift to God, I teach and exhort others to partake in the gift God has provided all through obedience to His Word.

GOD'S WAYS

ISAIAH 55:8

written with love by Betty Strickland

"For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways," says the Lord.

Have you ever stopped to think just how we muddle our lives, our heads and hearts with "things" which are certainly a waste of time. When if we would just do it God's way to start with, things would be much better.

God has told us (mankind) how to live and He will take care of us. Matthew 6:33.

Adam and Eve were told "do not eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil". Genesis 2:17. But Adam and Eve decide to give in to the serpent and do just the opposite of what God said. From that their physical bodies began to die just as God said they would. They were cast from the beautiful garden where all was provided for them to contend with toiling for theor food on ground cursed with thorns and thistles. And woman must suffer with sorrow and pain in child bearing. All this until man returns to the ground from whence he came.   Genesis 3.

Well, what about today? Let's take a look.

God says: "hear the word of God (gospel] Romans 10:17

God says: "Believe" Hebrews 11:6

when man stops there God say in James 2:17 "faith without works is dead"

God says we must "repent" or perish" Luke 13:3,5

God says "eternal life is IN CHRIST JESUS" Romans 6:23 and to get into Christ Jesus we must be baptized INTO Him" Romans 6:3

God says "Remain faithful to receive a crown of life" Revelation 2:10

Man wants it his way:

Man says: "I was plowing in my field and God spoke to me".

For the most part man agrees with God on this point but they want to stop there.

Man says "my God is a loving God and will not send anyone to burn in hellfire."

Man says "you do not have to be baptized to be saved, you are already saved at the point of belief unless you want to be a member of Such and Such Church".

Man says "once you are saved (way back there when you first believed) you will never be lost regardless of how you grieve God".

Hummmmm... "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways," says the Lord. Isaiah 55:8.

Behind Every Good Man is a Good Woman

By Sarah Leland

And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, (Hebrews 10:24)

We, as women, have such a knack for "stirring up" things! Many of us enjoy stirring up a delectable entree. But we also stir up emotions – either positive or negative. We can use our words to stir up hate through gossip, or we can stir up pessimism through our negativity. However, if we will focus our energy on the good – to stir up love and good works – then we may truly be beneficial all those we touch.

Is there a good woman behind every good man?

Can't there be good men who have not been helped by a good woman? The scriptures seem to answer with a strong "no."

If married, a man will be strongly impacted by his wife. "A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones." (Proverbs 12:4 KJV)  It is up to ME – I will make an impact on my husband, either to tear him down or build him up – I must decide which it will be. There are also certain God-given roles for men, which are dependent upon me being the wife I ought to be. This includes elders and deacons -- "A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, … given to hospitality,…. Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well." (1 Timothy 3:2a, 12 KJV)  Likewise, a good man will need a good wife to take on the role of father -- "And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up." (Deuteronomy 6:6-7 KJV)  The mother must take a big part in this continual teaching of her children under her husband's leadership. A husband can only fill the vital roles of elder, deacon and father with a good wife behind him.

Whether married or not, a good man will be impacted by good women. A good man may be influenced by a mother, an aunt, a grandmother or a Godly Christian woman. There are many Godly women who encourage men working in the service of God by inviting them into their home for meals, helping monetarily as they are able and giving constant encouragement. Their work often is done without any public recognition.  Many may be influenced by a good man without knowing that he was impacted deeply by the kindness of a Godly Christian woman, whom they may never meet. These women play an essential role in God's Kingdom, and this is something that can involve all Christian women… whether married or not!

What can I do to be a good woman behind my man?

All of us WANT our husband to be a good one. How, then, can I be a good woman behind my husband? A sweet, elderly widow in the congregation here said that the role of helpmeet is not the same in every relationship. What helps my husband might not help yours. I must know my husband and help him, as it is best for him. This seemed profound to me, but it is true. However, there are some general things that all wives can do for their husbands.

A good woman will SUBMIT. "Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord." (Ephesians. 5:22 KJV) One teacher I heard recently said that wives would make a bigger impact by submitting than by pushing. If I truly want my husband to be good and to be the leader, then I have to show that I will submit to him, not just when I want to, but also every time that it does not conflict with God's teachings. If I work diligently to be better, submission will come more naturally, and my relationship with my husband will be able to reach its potential.

A good woman will be TRUSTWORTHY. "The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil." (Proverbs 31:11 KJV) My husband should be able to trust me with all of the "little" things in life as well as his most prized possessions … his integrity, our marriage commitment and our children.

A good woman will DO GOOD. "She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life." (Proverbs 31:12 KJV) This seems like something obvious, but it is something that is easily forgotten when we allow ourselves to be too comfortable in our relationship. I should seek to do good for my husband everyday. If I allow myself to seek his good first with an attitude of love and humility, it will be rewarding to know that I am doing my best to lift up the man who is my husband.

Behind every good man is a good woman. May we all study, pray and strive to be more like the Christian woman God would have us to be every day. Of all of the things that someone may say about us when we die … an accurate statement of "she was a good woman" will trump over any other accomplishments or qualities

Deadly Sins
Anger
by Beth Johnson

“Of the Seven Deadly Sins, anger is possibly the most fun. To lick your wounds, to smack your lips over grievances long past, to roll over your tongue the prospect of bitter confrontations still to come, to savor to the last toothsome morsel both the pain you are given and the pain you are giving back—in many ways it is a feast fit for a king. The chief drawback is that what you are wolfing down is yourself. The skeleton at the feast is you.” Frederick Buechner

Likely we all have harbored feelings of anger against someone else because of wrongs we perceive they have done, but when their anger is turned toward us our perception of it is totally different. We may fear or we may think about how foolish they appear. Why is anger such a delicious feeling in ourselves and yet so odious coming from others? Solomon, the wisest man on earth said, “Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools” (Eccl. 7:9).

Solomon also told us how to defer someone’s anger and turn away the wrath that is causing carnage in our lives. “A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger” (Prov. 15:1). We know that tempers only escalate when we answer an angry man the same way he has spoken to us. But what if we are right and he is wrong? Does it really matter that we have our way or prove our point if we lose a friend or drive a permanent wedge in family relationships? Can we not rather take wrong in order to make peace and thus please God (1 Cor. 6:7)?

“The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression” (Prov. 19:11).

“He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city (Prov. 16:32).

In defense of their anger, many will quote Ephesians 4:26-27 and they will say, “See anger is not a sin, as long as I do not let the sun go down on it.” But these people fail to notice that five verses later, we are told to get rid of anger just like we are told to get rid of other evil qualities in our lives. “Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice” (Eph. 4:31). Would anyone deny that these are all evil qualities?

Later, in his letter to the church at Colossi, Paul wrote, “But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him (Col. 3:8-10).

Let’s all work to rid ourselves of this very deceitful, sinful emotion which men have taught us to use to get our way.

By Beverly Rainwater

"Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God. For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles—when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries.  In regard to these, they think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of dissipation, speaking evil of you." (1 Peter 4:1-4)

Saints must be equipped for warfare and suffering. The mind of Christ must be in them. Just as He was willing to suffer in order to do God’s will so must the saints be willing to suffer for His sake. Saints must keep within them the mind of being free from sin, ceasing from it, walking in the light and not in the darkness that sin had them in before they were buried with Christ in baptism (Romans 6:4). Their whole being should be that of living for God, willingly following and doing His will as His child. Once sin has been put behind the cross of Christ saints should realize that they have spent enough time, maybe way too much time, in the realm of sin and now must turn their lives around and flee from sin, not embrace it.

In these verses above Peter describes for saints the sins of a heathen world, that of the Gentiles and what they dealt in. He leaves no doubt as to what should be left behind when one leaves behind the past life of sin. He shows them exactly what they should not be doing in saying that they have spent enough time in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries. He lets them know that now the world will think it strange that they no longer engage in these things.  In other words their lives should show Christ, not Satan and sin. Peter is showing them that the world doesn’t even understand why or how they could live happy lives without these things, but that by their examples they should see that they indeed are happy and have full lives without sin and its enticements.

As we study these verses we should see that we as God's children should live to love and obey Him, to do His will unquestionably and to show through our example that we are His and that we are happy because of it. We, as His saints, should show a life of happiness, contentment, and great joy because of the hope of eternal life that we now have.

Philippians 4:6-8 gives us more understanding into the joy and mind of those inside of Christ, as well as how to achieve and keep it:

"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;  and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.  Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things."

Woman Glorifies God by her Godly Conduct as a Wife
By Keela Vaughn

"Wives, likewise, be submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they, without a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives,  when they observe your chaste conduct accompanied by fear." (1 Peter 3:1-2)

When many women hear the word submission, a cold shiver goes up and down their spines. Their first reaction is to be defensive and say that they will not let any man rule over them and they will not cower down before any man. Our society today makes the woman feel there is something wrong with her if she gladly submits to her husband. The “normal” family has changed from man, woman and children. Now the “normal” family can consist of single mothers raising their kids and the kids going between the homes of their moms and dads. It can also be classified as man with man, or woman with woman. Man and woman living with each other, not married, and raising their children. These all are seen as “normal” in today’s society. We as women can become confused as to what our role is in the marriage relationship.

In the beginning, God created everything. After each day of creation, God said it was good. He created all living creatures, male and female. But God saw that it was not good that man be alone. He created a helpmeet for Adam. Woman was someone to give him companionship, love and yes, submission. Yes, you heard me say the dreaded word, submission. God created woman from Adams’ rib: his side. God could have created woman from Adams’ toe to be “stepped on.” God could have created woman from man’s head, meaning woman was to be head of man. But in Gods’ omnipotence, He created woman from under mans’ arm to be protected by him, to be surrounded by his love. He created her to walk side by side, not behind or in front of, but by his side, in equality and mutual respect.

We also see in the garden, that man was to be in submission to Gods’ laws. He was to tend to the caretaking responsibilities of the Garden of Eden. God also told him that he could freely eat of any of the trees of the garden, except for the tree of the ‘knowledge of good and evil’. If he ate of it, he would die. Man was and is, under the submission of God. Woman was and is, under the submission of man. Man and woman are to submit to God. We as wives are to yield to the power of our husbands, who are under the power of God. Think of it this way. Think of an umbrella. It covers, or protects us from the storms. God covers man, man covers woman. God covers us both with His love!

Later on in the same chapter of Peter, God tells the husband to treat his wife in a way that his prayers will not be hindered.  "Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered." (1 Peter 3:7) This verse is warning the husband that his prayers may not be heard if he treats his wife in the wrong manner. This verse to me shows that the Christian husband’s spiritual relationship with God is directly affected by the way he treats his wife. He has a responsibility to show Gods’ glory through his actions toward his wife.

Okay, well you say, sure it is easy to be submissive to a husband who is submissive to Gods’ laws and treats his wife like a “prized possession.” But what if your husband is not living and acting according to Gods laws of submission. Do we have to submit to him when he is not a follower of God? Let’s look at (1 Peter 3:1-2) one more time. This verse is actually talking about a non-believing husband! A wife must still submit to her husband, even though he is not right with God. How can she do that? If he tells her she cannot read her Bible, pray to God, or attend worship services, should she submit to that? No, we as women are also under the umbrella of submission unto God and His laws and must peaceably, let our husband know that ‘we must obey God’s laws first’. In the same manner that we as citizens are to relate to our government leaders so are we as wives to relate to our husbands, according to the laws.

Wives are commanded to place themselves willingly under the guidance and control of their husbands, living in such a way that their husbands will be challenged to live in obedience to God’s truth! A godly wife does not stand up and challenge her husband to stand up to his duties in a nagging way, but rather stands on the promises of God, with a Christian beauty through her daily life and actions. She through her example of living a godly life will bring her husband to the realization that he wants to be a godly husband!

In closing, I want to give you an example of Jesus who showed what submission really is. In John 13, Jesus washes the disciple’s feet. He tells them that they are to do likewise. (Now, wait a minute! Have you ever seen my husbands’ feet?) Verses 15-17 read, "For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.  Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him.  If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them."  There are many truths we can glean from these scriptures. What I want you to see from them is this. Jesus, our Savior, submitted. He became as a servant by His actions. How can we think we are better than Jesus and not let ourselves submit to God’s teachings on the role of a wife? We are to follow the example of Jesus. It is not always going to be easy! But when we stand before God on the judgment day, will we be able to have the assurance that we behaved as a godly woman should, by submitting to our husband!

Women, it is time for us as godly wives to show our love for God’s commands and become the submissive wife that will help lead our husbands to fulfill their roles as a godly husband! We need to bring glory, praise and honor, to God through our actions of submission. Don’t let the word submission bring shivers up and down your spines, but rather stand up strong and proud in the role that God has given to us!

Two Ways

By Betty Strickland

In the context of this chapter Jeremiah 21, king Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah to "inquire of the Lord for us," because king Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon was making war against them. In verse 5 the Lord states "I Myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, even in anger and fury and great wrath." God told them, Zedekiah (king of Judah) and all that is left in Jerusalem after the pestilence and the sword and the famine, would be delivered into the hands of their enemies.

But, NOW, our text scripture"'Now you shall say to this people, ‘Thus says the LORD: “Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death" (Jeremiah 21:8). It would seem it is the choice of "the people" which they shall choose, life or death. God’s way is perfect and leads to life. "As for God, His way is perfect; The word of the LORD is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him" (2 Samuel 22:31). God’s way is "perfect" and certainly needs NO help from us. We must trust our Creator to know what we need in this life and to attain heaven in the next. We see here there is a condition. If we want God to be our "shield" we MUST trust Him.

Well, just what should we learn from this scripture and what should we trust? Let us take a look at a few more scripture. Trust not in the things of this world. "And the disciples were astonished at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, 'Children, how hard it is for those who trust in richesa]"> to enter the kingdom of God!" (Mark 10:24) and "Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy." (1 Timothy 6:17)

In Acts 5:29 when Peter and the other apostles were commanded not to teach in Jesus’ name, they answered, ". . . We ought to obey God rather than men."

So what happens to those who refuse to obey God? When the Lord returns in the air, we read in 2 Thessalonians 1:7-8, "and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ."

To obey the Gospel of our Lord, we must:

Hearing the gospel - Romans 10:17; James 1:23

Believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God - Acts 8:37

Repent of your sins - Luke 13:3; Acts 2:38

Confess Christ before men - Matthew 10:32;

Be baptized for the remission of your sins - Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38

And remain faithful - Revelation 2:10

Your choice, the way of life or the way of death.

The Burning Wardrobe

By Joan Miller

"Reproofs of instruction are the way of life, to keep you from the evil woman, from the flattering tongue of a seductress. Do not lust after her beauty in your heart, nor let her lure you with her eyelids. For by means of a harlot a man is reduced to a crust of bread; and an adulteress will prey upon his precious life. Can a man take fire to his bosom and his clothes not be burned? Can one walk on hot coals and his feet not be seared?"  (Prov.6:23b-28)

A reproof is a sharp, humbling, rebuke. Here it appears to be God's way to firmly remind mankind to stay on the strait, i.e., narrow path (2 Timothy 3:16).

We are to resist temptation's attractive dressing, to turn away from the enticement of sin no matter in what alluring clothing it chooses to hide its deadly poison. (James 4:7, 8)

God's will, when correctly taught, cloaks mankind's daily life with protective gear that is very clear. Often the paths of daily life are dark and full of twists, turns, sharp corners, potholes, mountains, and gorges. When embedded in our hearts, though, the Spirit of God's Word becomes much like a spotlight, shining ahead of us, to show us where we are headed. (1 John 1: 5-7)

We all tire of the world's tries to wheedle, coax, and inveigle us to sin. If we succumb, however, we will have voluntarily stripped away every stitch of clean spiritual attire, our sin filled, and dead soul appearing so putrid to God that He must turn away!!

"Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death." (Jas. 1:12, 14-15.)

The wise, when they begin to sense a weakness in their resolve, immediately pray. They don the protective armor spoken of in scripture (Ephesians 6:10-18) and are then able to retain a heart clothed in pure, white garments, a heart with which God can continue to be pleased.

SPOILS OF WAR WARDROBE

By Beth Johnson

"And the men which were expressed by name rose up, and took the captives, and with the spoil clothed all that were naked among them, and arrayed them, and shod them, and gave them to eat and to drink, and anointed them, and carried all the feeble of them upon asses, and brought them to Jericho, the city of palm trees, to their brethren: then they returned to Samaria" (2 Chronicles 28:15).

In 2 Chronicles, chapter 28, (2 Chronicles 28) the Lord describes how the leaven of Ahaz spread to all Judah so the people of Judah spoiled their own wardrobe like the wicked northern nation of Israel. It is a very short chapter with only twenty-seven verses. We learn that Ahaz was a son of Jotham and the 11th king of Judah (2 Kings 15:38; 2 Kings 16). He was an ungodly king who promoted the worship of Molech, with its pagan rites of human sacrifice (2 Chronicles 28:1-4). Judah worshipped molten images of Baal-im and offered their own children as sacrifices to false gods in the valley of Hinnom. What was God's response? He delivered them into the hands of the king of Syria, who "smote them" and carried the multitude away as captives to Damascus.

God also delivered them into the hands of the king of Israel, who slaughtered many. The children of Israel carried away captive of their own brethren, 200,000 women, sons, and daughters of the slaughtered men and took much spoil before they brought them to Samaria. Amazing as it may seem, a prophet of the Lord was there whose name was Oded, who told them plainly that God had delivered Judah into their hands because He was angry with them; however, God's wrath would be upon Israel if they did not let them go free. Israel had purposed to keep the people of Judah for slaves, but Oded reminded them of their own wickedness and how they had better show mercy to Judah.

Certain of the leaders stood up against the Israelite army and warned them they also were in jeopardy of being punished the same way because of their own sins. If they added this evil to their record, they surely would bring wrath from the Lord upon the entire nation. With a complete change of heart, the army of Israel left the captives and the spoil in front of the princes and all the congregation of the Israelite people and went to correct this grievous error. What did they do? They took the spoil they had taken in battle and used it to clothe the captive women, children and old people and carry them back to their homes. Who ever heard of such? They took that same spoil, which their victorious army had brought away, to clothe, feed, shoe, and anoint, these distressed people, set the feeblest of them upon asses, and escorted them safely to Jericho.

God had delivered Judah into the hands of their enemies because their king had made them to sin. He humbled them and made them naked before the world so they could learn a lesson. Then, as if nothing had been learned at all, Ahaz committed one more sin, which was to take gold and precious things from the house of the Lord to try to buy allegiance from Assyria, but Assyria did not help him when the enemy came to attack again. At his death, Ahaz was buried without honor in Jerusalem. He was not thought worthy of a burial in the kings' tombs (2 Chronicles 28:27). Surely, Ahaz spoiled his own wardrobe and caused Judah to follow his evil example.

"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land" (2 Chronicles 7:14).

A Changed Wardrobe

By Joan Miller

"Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him quickly out of the dungeon; and he shaved, changed his clothing, and came to Pharaoh." (Genesis 41:14)

Most of us know the Old Testament story of Joseph.  Despite being hated by his brothers, being sold into slavery and being surrounded by the Egyptian culture, he remained faithful to God, working hard and becoming the most trusted servant of the king under Pharaoh.  Joseph was sold to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard. Potiphar's wife wanted Joseph to indulge in adultery but he refused to sin. Through her false accusation, Joseph was thrown in the king's prison for several years.

Prisons were very unhealthy places overrun with rats and vermin like bedbugs, lice, and worse. They lacked hygiene facilities so there was no way to bathe or keep one's physical body clean, much less wash one's clothing. Dungeons were places also called cistern-pits inside the prison so they would have been windowless with perhaps even worse conditions than the rest of the prison's physical layout. Joseph continued to remain faithful to God, was blessed for it, and came to be fully trusted by the prison "warden" despite having to dwell in unspeakably filthy conditions.

When Pharaoh heard Joseph could interpret dreams he called for him and Joseph was quickly brought out of the dungeon. By then he must have looked more animal than human and smelled truly repulsive, on the surface, to others! The Bible says Joseph shaved and changed his clothing before he came to the highest ruling authority in the land. Joseph's earthly master would have gagged and turned away from him had he not "cleaned up." Once Joseph had changed his wardrobe, he was free to enter into the accepting presence of the king.

Indulging in sin makes us appear disgusting and odious (we stink!) to God. While those of us who came out of the world were "dressed" in sin, before we "cleaned up," repented and were baptized, we were barred from spiritually appearing before the Supreme Authority, God. When we obey the gospel invitation and are baptized, we exchange revolting, odious, and filthy rags of sin for brand new spiritual clothing. Jesus taught that inner cleanliness is better than outward in  Matthew 23:25-28 when He denounced the scribes and Pharisees.

The prison Joseph had to live in offered nothing with which he could stay physically clean but Christians have the "running water" of Christ's blood that can keep us spiritually clean when we repent, confess any sins, and ask forgiveness of them through Christ.

"...but if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin....If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 Jn. 1:7, 9)

THE HARLOTS WARDROBE

By Beth Johnson

And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart (Proverbs 7:10).

According to the reading, this woman had the attire of a harlot which was gaudy and flaunting to set off her beauty so that she might trap the unwary, void of understanding (Proverbs 7:7). Perhaps she was painted like Jezebel or she may even have gone with her shoulders and bosom bare showing "just the right amount of cleavage" for appeal. She does not seem to be a common harlot; because she was, according to her own testimony, a married woman, and kept house (Proverbs 7:19). Whether her claims were true or false, they were calculated to prevent any suspicion of cohabiting with a common harlot. Either way we see she was subtle of heart. In stark contrast, purity of heart will show itself in modesty which becomes women professing godliness; however, this woman had no semblance of purity (1 Timothy 2:10).

Common harlots were seen sitting in some open place with a covering over the face, or having a veil of a peculiar kind on the face and head probably to conceal their identities. The veil appears to be accepted evidence of such women (Genesis 38:14-19). No doubt, in Solomon's time, they had other distinctions. In all other countries, and in all times, the apparel they wore testified against them. Like the Sodomites, they declared their sin and did not hide it.

Even today, we know that merchants use displays to sell. If we pass by a public showcase, we know exactly what is being sold, because the salesmen want to attract the attention of every passer-by. Cars will be parked in advantageous positions for optimal sales. Fruit will be placed on stands for beauty and appeal. Even so, we see such demonstrations when we meet a woman on the street who has given special care to every detail of dress accenting what appeals to fleshly desires. Every hindrance will be removed for the viewer to be entrapped. One newspaper columnist has fittingly referred to these women as "the sausage girls." You do not have to be told what they are selling. You do not have to ask to know they have one goal in mind.

Christian women should have a different attitude, different attire, and a different attraction:

"Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price" (1 Peter 3:3-4).

Unlike the woman of the street, a good woman will desire to advertise godly merchandise. Her display will be godliness and sobriety, not lustful enticements.

God's Ways Are Higher Than Our Ways

By Betty Strickland

God put His illustration in comparing His ways with our ways into language we can understand. (The gospel has never been complicated, man has made it complicated.)

"For as the heavens are higher than the earth,  So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts." (Isaiah 55:9)

The Lord knows our thoughts (Psalm 94:11), and He knows they are "futile".  He knows the evil of man comes out of the heart of man:  Matthew 15:19b, "evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies." And in verse 20, we are told these things defile us.

We can see the sun in the "heavens" in the daytime and the moon and stars at night. But unless we happen to be on one of the space ships going into outer space, there is no way we can comprehend the distance. Furthermore, this may not even be the heavens our Lord is referring to in this scripture. In 2 Corinthians 12:2, Paul refers to a man caught up to the third heaven. So, as God is infinite, the heavens are infinite; and man being finite, so is the earth finite.

We can never think as God, even though we are to strive to instill His word in us; to live as He would have us live to be able to attain eternal life in heaven.

I was reading a book about a man meeting with American Indians. The princess of the Indians stated she understood the words the man spoke, but she did not understand how to use them. We can understand the words God uses, but we may not understand how to use them without further study or, as the Ethiopian eunuch told Philip in verse 31a of Acts 8, "How can I [understand], except some man should guide me?" Sometime we may need guidance. But we must always turn to the scriptures to see if what we have been told is from the word of God, just like the Bereans (Acts 17:11).

When Jesus gave us the saving gospel, He did not say we had to understand HOW the gospel saves (1 Corinthians 15:1-2).  We just trust God (have faith)  (Mark 16:16, Acts 16:31) to save us if we believe and obey.

Brother C.A. Wheeler (an old time preacher) wrote, "The object of the plan of salvation is to save people. It is a divine system, perfect and no part can be left out and the system work." Grace (Ephesians 2:8) is just as necessary as repentance (Acts 3:19), baptism (Galatians 3:27; 1 Peter 3:21) as essential as faith (Mark 16:16). Human wisdom may not see why baptism is necessary; but DEVINE wisdom did, for God put it in the system." Paul says, "the foolishness of God is wiser than man" (1 Corinthians 1:25a).

The Upright

By Elizabeth Peak

"...the way of the upright is a highway." (Proverbs 15:19b)

"The highway of the upright is to depart from evil;..." (Proverbs 16:17a)

Highways are the roads we take to travel from city to city. Most of us use maps to make certain we stay on the correct road. Some use a GPS system to navigate the highways.

A map has to be read as we travel (or mapped out before the journey begins). A GPS has to be programmed before leaving on the trip. It will tell you when to turn or when to get onto another road for the trip. If the traveler gets off the road before the end of the journey, the GPS will tell the driver to turn around and get back on the road.

A person wanting to travel on the highway of the upright will want to use the Bible as a map or GPS system. The Bible will show the person the way to become a Christian. "And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord." (Acts 22:16)

     The highway of the upright is marked by authority. Isaiah prophesied;

"A highway shall be there, and a road, And it shall be called the Highway of Holiness. The unclean shall not pass over it, But it shall be for others. Whoever walks the road, although a fool, Shall not go astray. No lion shall be there, Nor shall any ravenous beast go up on it; It shall not be found there. But the redeemed shall walk there," (Isaiah 35:8-9).

The Word of God will become the navigation system for the Christian.  From the scriptures, one will learn how to live a life that will keep them on the correct highway. This highway will be traveled "with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace." (Ephesians 4:2-3) The upright traveler is honest, just, scrupulous, conscientious, honorable, having or exhibiting a strict regard for what is morally right.

David wrote: "The LORD knows the days of the upright, And their inheritance shall be forever." (Psalm 37:18) A few verses later David talks about the security of the highway of the upright when he said: "The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, And He delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; For the LORD upholds him with His hand. I have been young, and now am old; Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, Nor his descendants begging bread." (Psalm 37:23-25)

These scriptures are comforting knowing that our LORD will never forsake the righteous. Our challenge is to live a righteous and upright life.

God Delivered Me from All My Fears

By Sarah Leland

We have contrived many objects for our fear. It seems that between the evening news, e-mail forwards, and movies, that fear is something the world thinks that we should walk around carrying on our shoulders. I did a google search and realized that the list of fears which people have is probably endless, including tragedy (in various forms to ourselves or others), sickness, death, eternal damnation, persecution, failure, terrorists, public speaking, spiders, heights, darkness, flying, rejection, being alone, and war. However, throughout the Bible, we are given a very different picture of fear and how we are to live our lives. Fear is real and it affects all of us. Yet, it is not something that should control our lives.

We are commanded to fear or respect God. Ecclesiastes 12:13 says "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is man's all." Matthew 10:28-31 says, "And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father's will. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows." This kind of fear should drive us to study God's will for our lives given to us in the Bible and to apply the things we learn to our lives.

Through respect and trust in God, I can overcome the fear of what other men may do to me. Hebrews 13:5-6 says, "For He Himself has said, I will never leave you nor forsake you. So we may boldly say: The LORD is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?" Men can do terrible things to me but if I am faithful to the Lord, I know that my reward is in heaven and that anything that may happen in this life is temporary and fleeting.

Through respect and trust in God, I can overcome the fear of large (or small) scale disasters. Psalm 46:1-3, 11 says, "God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, Even though the earth be removed, And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though its waters roar and be troubled, Though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah,... The LORD of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah". Matthew 6:19-21 says, "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." If I am right with God, then I need not fear earthly disasters because this is not my home and my treasures are not here.

Through respect and trust in God, I can overcome the fear of death and what lies beyond. Psalm 23:4 says, "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me;" Romans 8:38-39 says, "For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." If I obey and live faithfully to God, I may be uncertain about what death will be like, but I know I can trust Him to take me safely through.

Through respect and trust in God, I can overcome all of my fears. The text for the devotional today is Psalm 34:4, "I sought the LORD, and He heard me, And delivered me from all my fears." There may still be things in my life about which I am concerned, but when I seek God as this passage states, I can deal with anything that comes my way. Job went through many things which exemplify fears which we have, he dealt with tragedy and loss of his children, he experienced financial ruin as he lost his livestock and his servants, he encountered sickness in a very degrading and horrifying way, he dealt with rejection through the false claims of his friends and the discouragement of his wife. Yet, through it all, he remained faithful to God because of his deep respect and trust in God. Job 1:21 says, "Naked I came from my mother's womb, And naked shall I return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; Blessed be the name of the LORD." In the end, Job was indeed blessed by God more than he could have imagined. How much more joy awaits God's faithful children in heaven!

"I sought the LORD, and He heard me, And delivered me from all my fears."
(Psalm 34:4)

Those Who Do Not Desire To Know God’s Ways

By Janice Taylor

"They spend their days in wealth, And in a moment go down to the grave. Yet they say to God, ‘Depart from us, For we do not desire the knowledge of Your ways." (Job 21:13-14)

Isn’t this just one of the saddest verses? Have you ever known anyone who only wanted wealth, power, position and prestige? I have, and it is so very, very sad. All too often, the world sees a person’s value in the things they possess.

In class one Wednesday night, someone said something along the lines of, “This younger generation just has its values twisted!” I suppose that is true in one sense—values are twisted!  But, the Bible shows us it is not just the younger generation that has that problem. The Bible tells us of men, long ago, who did the very same thing! In (Proverbs 14:20), we read, "The poor man is hated even by his own neighbor, But the rich has many friends. Jeremiah gave a warning from God long before Christ arrived on this earth about the way people glory in things that are not truly important. "Thus says the LORD:  'Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom,  Let not the mighty man glory in his might, Nor let the rich man glory in his riches;'" (Jeremiah 9:23).

The tendency of human nature is to forget God when things are going well, and turn to Him when things go sour. Man can become content with the “status quo” and think that he doesn’t need any help from anyone. It becomes an “I” thing! I can do this, I can do that. God is forgotten! We can be reminded of the rich man in (Luke 12:18-21)"So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods.  And I will say to my soul, 'Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.'  But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’ 'So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.'"  This is just the same as the observation in our study text, (Job 21:13-14). They are the ones who spend every moment of every day chasing the dream of money. Yet, just like the rich man who planned to build bigger barns to store his bounty, they die. They didn’t desire the knowledge of God’s Word or counsel. My son is a funeral director and has often said the man who dies with a fortune takes no more with him than the poor man. There are no U-Haul trucks behind a hearse. My Mother used to say, “There are no pockets in a shroud.”

Randy Travis sings a song called “Three Wooden Crosses”, (Written by Doug Johnson and Kim Williams) that applies to this thought.

“I guess it's not what you take when you leave this world behind you, it’s what you leave behind you when you go.”

Let us, as Christian women, take heed to the examples and warnings in the Bible, especially the words of Christ in (Luke 12:15), "And He said to them, 'Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.'"

Handwriting on the Wall

A weary mother returned from the store,
Lugging groceries through the kitchen door.
Awaiting her arrival was her eight-year-old son,
Eager to relate what his younger brother had done.
"While I was out playing and Dad was on call,
T..J. took his crayons and wrote on the wall!
It's on the new paper you just hung in the den.
I told him you'd be mad at having to do it again."
She let out a moan and furrowed her brow.
"Where's your little brother right now?"
She emptied her arms with a purposeful stride,
She marched to his closet where he had gone to hide.
She called his full name as she entered his room.
He trembled with fear - he knew that meant doom!
For the next ten minutes, she ranted and raved
About the expensive wall paper and how she had saved.
Stressed over all the work it would take to repair,
She condemned his actions and total lack of care.
The more she scolded, the madder she got,
Then stomped from his room, totally dis-traught.
She headed for the den to confirm her fears.
When she saw the wall, her eyes flooded with tears.
The message she read pierced her heart with a dart.
It said, "I love you, Mommy," surrounded by a heart.
Well, the wallpaper remained, just as she found it,
With an empty picture frame hung to surround it.
A reminder to her, and indeed to all,
Take time to read the handwriting on the wall!!

GOD'S WAYS

Written with love by Betty Strickland

"For My thoughts are not your thoughts,  Nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD." (Isaiah 55:8)

Have you ever stopped to think just how we muddle our lives, our heads and hearts with "things" which are certainly a waste of time? When, if we would just do it God's way to start with, things would be much better.

God has told us (mankind) how to live, and He will take care of us. (Matthew 6:33)

Adam and Eve were told, not eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:17). But Adam and Eve decide to give in to the serpent and do just the opposite of what God said. From that moment, their physical bodies began to die just as God said they would. They were cast from the beautiful garden where all was provided for them to contend with toiling for their food on ground cursed with thorns and thistles. And woman must suffer with sorrow and pain in child bearing. All this until man returns to the ground from whence he came. (Genesis 3

Well, what about today? Let us take a look.

God says: hear the word of God (gospel).

"So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." (Romans 10:17)

Man says: "I was plowing in my field and God spoke to me."

God says:  Believe.

"But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him." (Hebrews 11:6)

When man stops there believing only, God says:  James 2:17,  "Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead."

Man for the most part agrees with God on this point, but wants to stop there.

God says: "repent" or "perish".

"I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse sinners than all other men who dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish." (Luke 13:3-5)

Man says, "my God is a loving God and will not send anyone to burn in hellfire."

God says: eternal life is IN CHRIST JESUS.

"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 6:23);

and to get into Christ Jesus, we must be baptized INTO Him.

"Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?" (Romans 6:3)

Man says:  "You do not have to be baptized in water to be saved, you are already saved at the point of belief if you want to be a member of our church."

God says: Remain faithful to receive a crown of life.

"Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life." (Revelation 2:10)

Man says: "Once you are saved (way back there when you first believed) you will never be lost, regardless of how you grieve God."

Hummmmm... "For My thoughts are not your thoughts,  Nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD." (Isaiah 55:8)

               Jesus Loves You
              By H. L. Gradowith

For some lonely souls there is no tomorrow,
Just yesterdays filled with trouble and sorrow;
No today, no hope, no comfort and no peace,
From the cruel past they can find no release.

For some there's darkness, the black dark of the night,
So lost and confused, they wander without light;
And when they draw near to the light, they evade
And seek to escape, as though they are afraid.

Maybe they're happy when they're suffering so,
Maybe they love it, maybe, but I don't know;
Maybe nobody ever treated them right,
Or maybe it's not so very black and white.

To the extent that we believe in our Lord
And do exactly what we're told in His Word
We find happiness, and hope for tomorrow,
And learn to forget past trouble and sorrow.

For in Him we find hope and comfort and peace,
From the cruel past Jesus grants full release!
We leave the darkness of sins' long, lonely night,
And bask in the warmth of His wonderful light!

In Jesus we find there's no need to evade
Or seek to escape, for we are not afraid;
We long for heaven when our time here is done,
We know He'll be There when our race here is run!

If you don't know Him, O! Friend why do you wait?
He wants to help you, come now it's growing late.
He will embrace you and help you come what may,
There is no other Friend like Jesus today.

Come to Him today, poor lost one come today,
Let Jesus cleanse you, He'll wash your sins away;
For Jesus loves you with a heavenly love,
And longs to take you to a Mansion Above!

The Crown of Righteousness

Written with love by Betty Strickland

"Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing."  (2 Timothy 4:8)

"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:" (2 Timothy 4:7).

Paul realizes his time on this earth was running out. He has done all he could do to "finish this race" called life, in good standing to be pleasing in God's sight and according to His Word.

"Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing." (2 Timothy 4:8)

According to Coffman Commentaries: "A crown is an earthly symbol of the glory, power and majesty of kings, metaphor - fitting symbol of the reward, honor and glory a Christian in the world to come."

This "crown of righteousness" is mentioned in different ways throughout the New Testament.

"Crown of glory" - 1 Peter 5:4

“crown of life" - James 1:12; Revelation 2:10

To receive the "crown" one must be "in Christ", and there is only one way to get "in Christ.” "For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ." (Galatians 3:27)

In Revelation 2:10, John states one must be faithful regardless of what hardships we face, even death. Do you ever wonder just how you would hold up if threatened with death if you do not deny Christ??? This is one great reason to instill God's word into our very deepest heart and mind, to keep us strong in the event we do come face to face with this evil.

But Paul assures Timothy, and all who read this letter, that we will have a “righteous Judge" in our Lord, who while on this earth was tempted in every way imaginable. Therefore, God has provided a way of escape for us.

"There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it." (1 Corinthians 10:13)

Our "righteous Judge" will not have the infirmities like we have. A few months ago, I served on a jury; and the judge sitting in judgment actually dozed off at least one time that I saw. We do not have to worry about our Lord dozing off, for He is "righteous"! He serves as our lawyer and our Judge. What a wonderful day that will be IF we remain faithful to Him and "look forward with love at His appearing”. He will see us through, just as He did Paul.

This question is asked in Coffman Commentaries - "Why should Christians love the appearing of Christ in Judgment?" and answers "It will mean that the glory of Jesus Christ will then be apparent to all men; the time of probation shall have ended; the reward of the righteous shall be received, and God shall rise in holy wrath and cast evil out of His universe". What a great thought! Let us strive to be a righteous servant, that we might arrive where there will be NO EVIL...

When we partake of the Lord's supper, we "show the Lord's death, until He come,” (1 Cor. 11:26). Therefore, we should be very faithful in worshiping God according to His will.

Let us look forward to our Savior's second coming and the faithful receiving that "crown of righteousness.”

Baptism
By Sandy Tipton

There is nothing in the world that any man can do to merit salvation, but we all need it. Romans 3:23 "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."  Yet knowing that we cannot merit salvation does not exclude us from doing our part to obtain our salvation. Examples throughout the Bible show us that though God does the saving, man must do his part in obeying and following His plan.

Think of Noah. God told Noah He would save him from the flood, but Noah had to build the ark and be in the ark when the flood came. So Noah built the ark and got in the ark and was saved from the flood. Does that mean that Noah saved himself from the flood? Did Noah merit his salvation from the flood? Would God have saved Noah had he not built the ark and got in it?

Think of Rahab spoken of in Joshua. She was an inhabitant of Jericho who helped two spies from the Lord's army escape being captured. (
Joshua 2) In return for her help she asked the spies to save her and her family from death when the Israelites came to conquer the city. In verse 11 the spies agreed to "deal kindly and truly" with her. In verse 17 the men said to her,
"we will be blameless of this oath of yours which you made us swear, (18) unless, when we come into the land, you bind this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and unless you bring your father, your mother, your brother, and all your father's household to your own home. (19) So it shall be that whoever goes outside the doors of your house into the street, his blood shall be on his own head."

Joshua chapter 6 (Joshua 6) tells us that Rahab and her family were saved when the rest of the city was destroyed. Did Rahab merit this salvation? Absolutely not! Would she have been saved if she hadn't  put out the scarlet cord and been in her home when they told her to be?

Think of Naaman. In
2 Kings 5 the Bible tells us of a honorable man named Naaman who was stricken with leprosy. Naaman went to a man of God, Elisha, in hope of being healed of his leprosy. When he arrived at Elisha's house
, he was told to (vs.10) "Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh will be restored to you, and you shall be clean." Being asked to do that enraged Naaman, and he left angry and still eaten with leprosy. He came up with other things he would rather do to be cleansed. He thought Elisha should have come out and called on the name of the Lord and waved his hand over Naaman to heal the leprosy. He thought of other nicer rivers he could have gone and dipped in. Thankfully for Naaman, his servants reasoned with him; and he listened. Verse 14 says Naaman went down to the Jordan river and dipped seven times, just as the man of God had instructed him to do, and only after he did those things, his flesh was restored; and he was cleansed of his leprosy. Did Naaman merit his salvation from the leprosy? Absolutely not! But when he obeyed the command from the Lord, he was cleansed. Would Naaman have been saved from the leprosy if he hadn't  dipped in the Jordan river seven times?

So, we can see that though salvation is not merited, man must follow God's plan to receive salvation.

Matthew 7:21  "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven."

James 2:20
b "...faith without works is dead."

So the question is, what must we do to be saved? Hebrews tells us that Christ became the author of eternal salvation for all those who obey Him. My goal is to show you through scripture that plan of salvation that is laid out for us so that we, like Noah, Rahab, Naaman and many others
, will know exactly what it is we must do to be saved.

Hebrews 5: 8-9 says,  " though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered.  And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him,"

It was the will of the Father for the Son to suffer and die on the cross so that all of mankind might have salvation. Though it was very hard for Jesus to do, He submitted to the will of the Father. He obeyed the Father and, then, became the author of eternal salvation.

Luke 22:42  "saying, 'Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.'"

So the questions are what is that plan, and how do we obtain the salvation of which Jesus became the author?  Exodus chapter 12 (Exodus 12) foreshadows the plan of salvation of which Jesus became the author.  God's people were required to take a lamb without blemish (Exodus 12:5) and kill itThen, they were to put the blood over the doorposts of their houses. (vs.13) "Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt."

(vs.23) " For the LORD will pass through to strike the Egyptians; and when He sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the LORD will pass over the door and not allow the destroyer to come into your houses to strike you."

In 1 Corinthians 5:7
, Paul was speaking to the Corinthians concerning various sins in their congregation and said, "Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us."

1 Peter 1: 18-19 again tells us how Christ was the blood sacrifice for us, just as the spotless lamb was to be the sacrifice for the Israelites. "knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot."

If Christ is our passover, how do we access His blood? How do we make sure that we, like the Egyptians, are covered with the blood of the spotless lamb?
Romans 6:1-7  "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?  Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?  Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?  Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection,  knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.  For he who has died has been freed from sin."

Until you die in baptism
, you are not freed from sin.

Ephesians 1:7 "In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace"

Revelation 1:5, "and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood"

Romans 6:4, " Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life."

Colossians 2 :11-12, "In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead."

1 Peter 3:18 & 21 "(18) For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit,

(21) There is also an antitype which now saves us--baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,"

Is salvation merited? Absolutely not! But just like the Israelites, we have to obey the Lord's commandments if we want to be saved. If the Israelites had not covered their doors with the blood of the spotless lamb, they would have perished. If we are not covered with the blood of our spotless Lamb, then we will perish! As the verses show, the way to access Christ's blood is by being buried with Him in baptism. Once we have been baptized, we have accessed His blood; and if we continue to do His will, His blood will continue to cleanse us.

1 John 1:7, " But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin."

For the rest of this discussion, let's look at several examples from the book of Acts that show exactly what people did when they were taught God's word, believed it
and wanted to be saved:

Acts 2:21 says "And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the Lord Shall be saved."  What does it mean to "call upon the name of the Lord"? In Acts 2 , Peter is preaching to the people of Jerusalem, telling them that they crucified the Lord. Acts 2:37-39, " Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?"  Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call."

Acts 2:40-41 "And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation." Then those who gladly received his word were baptized"

Why were they baptized? Look back up to verse 38 - "for the remission of sins". Acts 2:41 cont. ".. and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. " Acts 2:47 goes on to say, "And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved."

Here a couple of questions to consider:

1 - Who was being added? (vs. 41 - Those who received his word were added)
2 - What were they being added to? ( vs. 47 - they were added to the church)
3 - Who added them? (vs. 47 - the Lord added them)

In
Acts 8
, Saul was persecuting Christians - the Christians scattered and went everywhere preaching the Word.
Phillip went to Samaria and Acts 8:5 says
"and preached Christ to them."

Acts 8:6
" And the multitudes with one accord heeded the things spoken by Philip, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. "  (What was Phillip preaching to them? Acts 8:5 - "preached Christ to them")

Acts 8:12 "But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized."

Next, consider the conversion of the Eunuch. In Acts 8:26-29, an angel spoke to Phillip and told him to catch up with a man in a chariot on his way to Gaza. Acts 8:30-31 "So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, "Do you understand what you are reading?"  And he said, "How can I, unless someone guides me?" And he asked Philip to come up and sit with him. " Verses 35-36 say, "Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him. "
"Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, "See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?"

After Phillip preached Jesus
, the Eunuch said, "What hinders me from being baptized?"  Then, in verse 37 Phillip replies, "Then Philip said, "If you believe with all your heart, you may." And he answered and said, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God."" Verse 38 states, "So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him."

Though there are more , let's just look at one more example in the conversion of Saul. In
Acts 9
, we find Saul breathing threats of murder to Christians and had permission from the high priest to capture any Christians he might find.

On his way to Damascus
, a light shown from Heaven. Saul fell to the ground and heard a voice from Heaven saying, starting in vs. (4), " Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?" (5)  And he said, 'Who are you Lord?' Then the Lord said, " I am Jesus who you are persecuting...'  (6)
So he, trembling and astonished, said, "Lord, what do You want me to do?" Then the Lord said to him, "Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do."

Verse 8 tells us that Saul was blind
, and verse 9 says that he was three days without sight and food or drink. Meanwhile, in Damascus, the Lord appeared to a disciple named Ananias and told him to go to Saul.  Ananias went to Saul and laid his hands on him.

Verse 18 says, "Immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he received his sight at once; and he arose and was baptized." Verse 19 goes on to say that then he received food and was strengthened. So, he was baptized before he did anything else - even EAT - after being without food for 3 days.

From this
lesson we've seen that obedience is required for salvation. We've looked at the verses that tell us that Jesus was the author of salvation. Throughout the Bible, from the beginning to the end, that plan the He authored is planned for, foreshadowed, came to pass and is available for us today. In order to obtain the salvation that He is offering us, we have to do our part. Over and over in the book of Acts, when a person asked what was necessary for salvation, they were told to repent and be baptized for the purpose of washing their sins away. When they did this and when we do this,
we are added by God to the body of Christ. Sadly, many good people do not know this.

Matthew 7:21-27
"Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.  Many will say to Me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?'  And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!'
"Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock:  and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.  But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand:  and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall."

What is baptism? "Baptism" comes from the Greek word "baptizo" which literall means - "To dip repeatedly, to immerse, to submerge, to wash, to make clean with water." (Strong's Greek Lexicon / Strong's number : 907)

Do You Gather With Him

By Amy Brown

He who is not with Me is against Me; and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad. (Matt 12:30)

When I read this verse, I think of a faithful Gospel preacher and good friend who used to often remind us, "If you're not gathering, you're scattering." He wanted to be sure we understood it was one or the other. There is no "in between" or "riding the fence."

No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. (Luke 16:13)

So many times, I have heard people reject Christianity on the grounds that it is "too restrictive" and they do not want to be "slaves" to any person or thing. Sadly, they do not realize that they are already slaves.

Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one's slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? (Romans 6:16)

In the context of our theme, "Love for Souls," the question becomes, "Are you gathering with Him, or are you scattering (working against) Him?" Are you actively seeking and seizing opportunities to teach others the Gospel, or do you remain silent for fear of ridicule or rejection?

And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!" (Romans 10:15)

Pray for those doors to be opened, that you might recognize such opportunities, and boldly take advantage.

And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature. (Mark 16:15)

Stand in the Ways and See

By Betty Strickland

"Thus says the LORD: “Stand in the ways and see, And ask for the old paths, where the good way is, And walk in it; Then you will find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’ " (Jeremiah 6:16)

We say we would never say such as that. Is that your feelings on the matter? Are you sure? When you or I depend on someone, a preacher or a Bible class teacher, to do our studying for us without checking to see if "these things were so" as the Bereans did in Acts 17:11, are we not guilty of the same thing?

We are going to take a look at some of the examples   from God’s word of people that wanted to do it their way rather than God’s way.

First, there is Adam and Eve succumbing to the wiley old serpent in Genesis 3. They were expelled from the garden.

Cain killed his brother and then lied to the Lord and was punished for it. (Genesis 4)

Then there was the great flood in Genesis 7f. Noah spent 120 years preaching to those around him; and, in the end, only 8 souls were saved.

If Israel wanted to possess the land God gave them, they HAD TO listen to the statues and judgments which were TAUGHT them. (Deuteronomy 4:1)

Even when Moses was told to SPEAK to the rock in Numbers 20:8, he struck it twice (verse 11); and in verse 12 God told him, "Because you did not believe Me, to hallow Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them." and in Deuteronomy 31:2 (Moses speaking), "And he said to them: “I am one hundred and twenty years old today. I can no longer go out and come in. Also the LORD has said to me, ‘You shall not cross over this Jordan.’"  There is a day coming when we all we be judged (Romans 14:10) and I pray none reading this lesson will hear the sad, sad words,"depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!"

"Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’  And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’"  (Matthew 7:21-23).

We are told today, "It does not matter what we believe, and we are all going to the same place (heaven) just by a different way." Really? It would seem when God has given a direction, there is no such thing as a "different way." We can go to the Scripture again and ask a certain prophet of God we can read about in 1 Kings 13. God told this prophet to go to Bethel and warn Jeroboam of the error of their ways in their worship that was not acceptable to God. After the prophet had given God’s judgment on the altar and worship done in Bethel, Jeroboam attempted to have the young prophet arrested; and his hand withered, the altar split apart as the man of God had delivered the word of the Lord. Well, Jeroboam begs the man of God to "Please entreat the favor of the LORD your God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored to me." in verse 6. The man of God does so,  and the king’s hand is restored.  Then the king asked the man of God to come home with him for food and drink, and he would give him a reward. To which the young man answers that even for half your houses, I would not go home with you because (verse 9"For so it was commanded me by the word of the LORD, saying, ‘You shall not eat bread, nor drink water, nor return by the same way you came.’"

Then an old prophet lies to the man of God and tells him God spoke to him and told him it would be alright for the man of God to come back to his house to eat and drink. So, the young prophet takes him at his word instead of doing as God had instructed him and goes back to the old prophet’s house, eats and drinks (1 Kings 13:11-19). Then the word of God truly comes to the old prophet, "Now it happened, as they sat at the table, that the word of the LORD came to the prophet who had brought him back; and he cried out to the man of God who came from Judah, saying, “Thus says the LORD: ‘Because you have disobeyed the word of the LORD, and have not kept the commandment which the LORD your God commanded you, but you came back, ate bread, and drank water in the place of which the LORD said to you, “Eat no bread and drink no water,” your corpse shall not come to the tomb of your fathers.’” So it was, after he had eaten bread and after he had drunk, that he saddled the donkey for him, the prophet whom he had brought back.  When he was gone, a lion met him on the road and killed him. And his corpse was thrown on the road, and the donkey stood by it. The lion also stood by the corpse." (1 Kings 13:20-24)

Then we hear today "Well, my preacher said this or that." That’s not good enough, sister and friends. God said it and that settles it.

Matthew 7:21 -23, "Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’  And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’"

Christ is THE WAY - "Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." (John 14:6) And there is only one way to "get into Christ" - "For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ." (Galatians 3:27)

"Thus says the LORD: “Stand in the ways and see, And ask for the old paths, where the good way is, And walk in it; Then you will find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’ " (Jeremiah 6:16) Please do not say as those of old said - "‘We will not walk in it."

Paul's Joy and Crown

By Janice Taylor

"Therefore, my beloved and longed-for brethren, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, beloved." (Philippians 4:1)

Wow, wouldn't it be wonderful to have such a man as Paul write a letter to you with those terms? To be called beloved and longed for brethren? To be called a joy and crown. What must these people have been like to bring such joy to Paul's heart? To really understand Philippians 4:1, we must remember the Bible was not written in chapter and verses like we see it. This was a LETTER to the Philippians. Paul's praise begins in verse 3 of the first chapter when he says, "I thank my God upon every remembrance of you." Why was he so proud of these people? They followed Christ as Paul had taught them. He tells them to continue to follow his example (Philippians 3:17). He praised them as a group and by name. He longed for them and the strength they gave him. Paul was like you and me----he gained strength from fellow Christians. He tells them to always preach nothing but Christ; to be strong and steadfast in their love for Him.

Paul used the same phrase, joy, and crown, in 1 Thessalonians 2:19-20, that better explains what he meant by that expression. "For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Is it not even you in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at His coming? For you are our glory and joy." He was letting them know that their presence on that great and glorious day of the Lord's coming would be his glory and joy because he had been blessed to have been able to teach them the gospel of Christ.

The Philippians supported him spiritually and financially (Philippians 4:16).These people had been such a joy for Paul that he felt blessed to have been a part of their growth in the gospel. He loved, admired, and praised them for their efforts. He not only praised them, but also encouraged them and warned of evils that could lead them away from Christ. He warns them to mark those who are enemies of the cross; they are the ones who walk outside of the example he has given them. A portion of our study verse, "so stand fast in the Lord," is part of that warning to them to remain faithful. To stand fast, is to continue to teach Christ in face of adversity. Paul teaches by example by letting them know his trials were blessings in the long run. "But I want you to know, brethren, that the things which happened to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the gospel, so that it has become evident to the whole palace guard, and to all the rest, that my chains are in Christ; and most of the brethren in the Lord, having become confident by my chains, are much more bold to speak the word without fear." (Philippians 1:12-14)

This is a great example for us as well. We need to realize the life of a Christian is not always easy or even "popular" by the standards of the world. We will, by teaching and example, show our love for the souls around us by living a life pleasing to our Father. Can you imagine that Day, standing before our God and Savior, when you will be a joy and crown? The vision of Christ and the promise of eternal life is a constant beacon leading us to heaven.

God bless you.

The Testing of Your Faith Produces Patience

By June Smith

My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. (James 1:2-3)

The first time I remember reading the above verse, I was a rather young Christian. I thought, "how can this be so? how can we have joy in the midst of trials? who wants to be tested? I believe Jesus is God's son isn't that enough faith?" I thought I had a pretty good measure of patience. Of course, if your faith has not been tested you do not really know if you have Godly patience or not. When we are young we tend to try to "fix things" ourselves and figure them out based on our limited experience. Needless to say, we could avoid many difficulties if we would be patient and wait on God. As James 1:3 (KJV) says, "Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience."

Patience as defined by Unger's Bible Dictionary is endurance, constancy, forbearance, long-suffering, a patient waiting for. Patience is that calm and unruffled temper with which the good man bears the evils of life, whether they proceed from persons or things. It also manifests itself in a sweet submission to the providential appointments of God and fortitude in the presence of duties and conflicts of life. This grace saves one from discouragement in the face of evil as stated in Luke 21:19 (KJV) "In your patience possess ye your souls." and it aids in the development of character as shown in James 1:3-4 " knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing."

This patience and trusting in God will end in reward in the life to come as we read in Romans 2:7 "...eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality;..." Truly this gives us reason to count it all joy when we fall into trials for the patience that will be developed in us, because of the testing will produce in us the patience that will carry us through life depending upon God and not upon self. The final outcome of such patience will lead us to eternal life with God.

The Lord Still Knows How to Deliver the Godly

Written with love by Betty Strickland

"and delivered righteous Lot, who was oppressed by the filthy conduct of the wicked (for that righteous man, dwelling among them, tormented his righteous soul from day to day by seeing and hearing their lawless deeds) -- then the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations" (2 Peter 2:7-9a).

Have you ever been watching a news program and the things reported really HURT to the heart of you or ever heard others talking of things they enjoy doing or seeing or dressing in ways that offend your vision of the way God desires His people to talk, act or dress?

"Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God." (James 4:4) We cannot act like the world and be pleasing to God. "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God." (Romans 12:2) "For all that is in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life--is not of the Father but is of the world." (1 John 2:16)

These things are not pleasing to God; and He will not preserve you, if you insist on being like everyone else around you. For you see, once you have obeyed the Lord and go back to living like nothing has changed in your life, you are not doing God's will.  "For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning." (2 Peter 2:20) The end is worse than the beginning!

But as God knew "righteous" Lot and delivered him out of sinful Sodom, He also knows His own today, those who are living righteously and living to please Him instead of self. He recognized Lot in all the wickedness of Sodom and Gomorrah. Even though the world today is coming close to competing with Sodom and Gomorrah,  i.e. same-sex marriage is made legal even in our "Christian nation", the legality of killing babies, calling good evil and evil good, using the Lord's name in vain, and "God still knows His own."

But these things aught not to be! We cannot allow our hearts to become so calloused that these things do not grieve us, as it also grieves God. If we are His people, the things that hurt Him will also hurt us.

We can not look on or fellowship sin,  "And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them." (Ephesians 5:11) We must STAY in fellowship with God, if we want to gain a home in heaven and want Him to KNOW us and "preserve us."  "But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin." (1 John 1:7)

Do the things you see and hear "Torment your righteous soul"? If so, God will help and keep you unto the judgment and "deliver you out of temptation" because, "Happy is the man that feareth alway: but he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into mischief." (Proverbs 28:14) KJV

Please, obey the Lord commands.

Romans 10:17,  "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."

Acts 2:38, "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."

Revelation 2:10, "Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life." KJV

SHADOW OF WINGS

By Beverly Rainwater

"Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast" (Psalm 57:1).

David believed that God provided a place of refuge. David named this place the shelter or shadow of God's wings. It was a place to stay until the calamities he was facing passed by.

David sought the shadow of God's wings many times in his life. David easily and readily acknowledged God's help:

"Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice" (Psalm 63:7).

"How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings" (Psalm 36:7).

"Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings" (Psalm 17:8).

We should be willing today to seek protection under the shadow of God's wings just as David did. Our protection from those who would persecute us for teaching and preaching God and His Word, is to seek the shadow of His wings. There we will have the safety of a loving and caring Father who is willing to save us, if we but obey and keep striving to be like Him.

Those who would persecute us will not be able to break the bond we have with our God in heaven and His Son, unless we let them. They may destroy the body, but they cannot destroy the soul if we remain steadfast and unmovable.

"Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord" (I Corinthians 15:58).

Pursue Peace and Holiness

By Janice Taylor

"Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord": (Hebrews 12:14)

The King James Version reads, "Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:"  These two translations of the Greek word "dioókete", give us a clear picture of what is meant here. "Follow" is to make your way in the path of another. We certainly should make every effort to follow Christ in our daily lives. Paul said, in Philippians 3:17, "Brethren, join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as you have us for a pattern." The 1st century Christians followed Paul as he followed Christ. The scripture gives us a pattern for Christian living that is direct and clear. To "pursue" gives a sense of relentlessness, as in to follow Him with a purpose and diligence.

The thing we are to follow or pursue is "peace with all men." Christ is the very essence of peace. He said in Matthew 5:9, "Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God."  Peace is one of the fruits of the Spirit in  Galatians 5:22, "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness."  Another verse that reinforces this thought is Titus 3:2, "to speak evil of no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing all humility to all men."

We are to also follow or pursue "holiness, without which no one will see the Lord:" The word "holy" literally means set apart, separated and consecrated.  I see holiness as being consecrated in God's service by living a Godly and devout life of dedication to Him.  If we want to see God we obviously do not have any other  choice but to pursue holiness. God planned for and expects us to strive for this holy life.  The scripture plainly says if we do not obtain holiness, we will not see God.  Do you want to see God?

This is a simple, straightforward verse. Easy to understand, but often difficult to follow! We live in a world of religious diversity where the common thought is "I'm ok""you're ok " and "we're ok."  The fact is, only those who follow the path Christ has drawn out for us will be "ok".  We must be holy and, therefore, separated from the world. Yet, we must live in the world. Paul wrote in Romans 12:18, "If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men."   We will live, love, work, socialize and worship in a world where we are often misunderstood or even shunned. John 14:3 says, "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also."  Let us always put Christ and his church above the cares and concerns of the world. We will be found faithful in that day He receives us to Himself.

Praise God in the Assembly of the Saints

By Betty Kimbro

"Praise ye the LORD. I will praise the LORD with my whole heart, in the assembly of the upright, and in the congregation." (Psalm 111:1)

"Praise ye the LORD. Praise ye the LORD from the heavens: praise him in the heights." (Psalm 148:1)

"Praise ye the LORD. Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise in the congregation of saints." (Psalm 149:1)

"Praise ye the LORD. Praise ye the name of the LORD; praise him, O ye servants of the LORD. Ye that stand in the house of the LORD, in the courts of the house of our God." (Psalm 135:1-2)

These are the words or songs written by the Psalmist by inspiration of God. These are written for our learning. This means these are words written to us to tell us how we are to worship God.

The following verses are written by Paul to the Colossians and the Ephesians. They are also for our learning.

"That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen."  (Ephesians 3: 17-21).

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him." (Colossians 3:16-17)

The Psalmist says in Psalm 150:6, "Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD."

Let us Praise God for:

The beautiful earth He made for us to dwell on.

Giving us rules (laws) to live by, that we might know right from wrong.

The Bible, His precious words of life for our guide.

Jesus Christ, His only Son, who willingly came to earth to redeem us from our sins with His own blood.

Loved ones, family; teachers and preachers, elders who watch for our souls.

    His excellent greatness.

Our Avenue of prayer knowing He is always there for us to cleanse our souls to Him.

Our homes, food, and all our daily needs.

Healing the sick and restoring their health.

His everlasting love to us and His promise of a home in Heaven if we follow His commandments.

I have listed only a few of the ways to offer Praise to God. Take time to add your own thoughts as there are so many I know you can add. I love Psalm 121. It gives us even more reasons to Praise Our God for what He has done for us:

"I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore."

May God bless us all as we spend time in Prayer, praising God for His numerous blessings. May we grow up in Him and spread the Word of His Love to All Around us.

Consider Who Endured

written by Betty Strickland with love.

For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls. (Hebrews 12:3)

You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin. (Hebrews 12:4)

Do you ever get tired of hearing our friends and family complain about "How bad someone has done them", did not get that promotion at work, my husband or children do not appreciate me, my friend does not call me as I think she should, the weather is awful and on and on the list goes. In this "me" mentality that seems to be prevalent today. This is the norm, I guess. But the question is...do you really want to be considered "in the norm"?

Let us consider what our Lord Jesus Christ did for us in order for us to have the opportunity to be saved.

Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole garrison around Him. (Matthew 27:27)

And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. (Matthew 27:28)

When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!” (Matthew 27:29)

Then they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head. (Matthew 27:30)

And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him away to be crucified. (Matthew 27:31)

Have you ever been spat upon? Beaten until you bled? Mocked by soldiers. Nailed to a cross and that cross dropped into a hole? We that live in the USA have been very blessed indeed. We do not have to be afraid of any of these things happening to us because we choose to worship our God as He commands. (At least not yet.) We may lose a friend or family members may turn on us because we have chosen to worship God "in spirit and in truth.”

God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” John 4:24 But what is that compared to what the Lord did for us. He endured all the punishment men could throw at Him. Are we so weak we cannot stand up under insignificant things for Him? Remember - I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Phil. 4:13.

In "striving against sin" the Lord promised in 1 Cor. 10:13 "No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it." He can do this because He was tempted just like we are and resisted the devil's wiles, so He knows how Satan will attack us from every angle. And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to Him. (Mark 1:13)

Satan is not worried about those in the world, he already has them, and he wants the faithful Christian. But we are blessed to have God (if we are faithful Christians) watching over us - For the eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, And His ears are open to their prayers; But the face of the LORD is against those who do evil.” (1 Peter 3:12)

I wonder how we sound to God when we complain and moan and groan about how awful we are treated, hummmm.

Do not fall into Satan's trap of becoming "weary and discouraged.” Be strong in the Lord and stop to think what Christ did for you and me to have the best life on earth and a crown of life in the end. "Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life." (Revelation 2:10)

Be Renewed

By Dena Ivie

"And be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness" (Ephesians 4:23-24).

After one puts off the old man by being baptized into Christ, he / she becomes a new creation.

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new" (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Being this new person means, we "put off" and "put on" certain things. Study carefully the following verses:

"But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him" (Colossians 3:8-10).

"Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful" (Colossians 3:12-15).

"The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts" (Romans 13:12-14).

Numerous verses teach Christians how to "be renewed in the spirit of your mind."

Study this example: "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God" (Romans 12:1-2).

As we faithfully study God's word, we will be renewed in our minds. As Christians continually renew their minds, there will be growth and increased obedience to "that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."

The Ungrateful are in Spiritual Danger

By Janice Taylor

"because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened." (Romans 1:21)

This is how sin really begins in a Christian's life, isn't it?  People begin to take God for granted. It is like we do with our parents, our spouse and our children. It seems they are the ones we "take things out on" as the saying goes. They are always there. They love us. They are the ones we yell at, nag or complain to. I have heard it said that we know they will love us anyway, so if something goes wrong in our daily activities, we "snap" at our spouse! I must say, I do not "snap" very often, but I do take my husband for granted sometimes. I just know he loves me and is there to do all of the little things he has always done. My friend just lost her husband of over 50 years and has really reminded me to cherish each and every day. If we dread a day without our spouse, how much more should we fear an eternity without God?

The people in Rome knew God; but somewhere along the way, they became neglectful and failed to glorify Him. They began to take Him for granted and were no longer thankful for their blessings. What happened next is the progression of that sin. They became futile in their thoughts. Futile is defined as, "lacking vigor or purpose; inept or ineffective vain, unavailing, useless, in vain, fruitless, hopeless, impractical, worthless, unprofitable, to no effect, not successful."  Their thoughts became useless in the worship of our God. This, of course, led to their hearts being hardened, just as God said it would. In so many verses about people's hearts being hardened, they had once known God!

Brethren, do not allow a desire for the world to grow in your heart. That desire will rule your life, if you let it. You will begin to depend upon yourself instead of the Lord. This will lead to a hardening of your heart, and you will find yourself taking God for granted. Spend a portion of each day in grateful praise and adoration for Him and His love for you!

Peter Warns of Judgment on the Unjust

Written with love by Betty Strickland

"and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment, and especially those who walk according to the flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise authority. They are presumptuous, self-willed. They are not afraid to speak evil of dignitaries,  whereas angels, who are greater in power and might, do not bring a reviling accusation against them before the Lord." (2 Peter 2:9b-11)

Peter is concluding what he started in 2 Peter 2:4, "For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment;".  If God did not spare the angels that sinned, how on earth can we expect Him to allow sinful man (generic) into His perfect presence? In verse 9b it states the "unjust" are "under punishment", just like the angels of verse 4. They are receiving a foretaste of the punishment that is to come after judgment.

In verse 10 Peter states, "and especially those who walk according to the flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise authority. They are presumptuous, self-willed. They are not afraid to speak evil of dignitaries." They have no fear of life here or the here-after. My way or no way, just more of the "ME" mentality. "Whatever I want to do, I am going to do regardless of who says it is wrong - man or God". Laws of men or laws of God, it matters not.

Some of the commentaries say this is talking of false teachers and there-in lies much danger to those that would teach falsely and those that would believe their teaching. WE must be a student of the Word so we will be able to recognize false teaching when we hear it. WE must know enough to remain "godly" and not be judged "unjust."

Now, verse 11: "whereas angels, who are greater in power and might, do not bring a reviling accusation against them before the Lord." Have you ever heard the old saying "Fools rush in where angels dare to tread"? That seems to be about what Peter is saying in this verse. Angels will not dare go where they have no right to go, and neither should we. God is in control; and He will be the judge, the only RIGHTEOUS judge, and for that we should be thankful. "For the LORD will judge His people And have compassion on His servants, When He sees that their power is gone, And there is no one remaining, bond, or free."  (Deuteronomy 32:36)  "For the LORD will judge His people, And He will have compassion on His servants.(Psalm 135:14)

The time to make your life "godly" is now, while there is life in you. In death there is no way to repent and obey God. That must be done while you are still physically alive.

I am not going to try to tell you I understand all there is about life after death. The scriptures do not give us enough information to be perfectly clear, but I do know the Hebrew writer says: "And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment,"(Hebrews 9:27). We must all face death and judgment. The main thing is to be ready to face that judgment when we leave this earth or the Lord comes, which ever comes first.

"For we know Him who said, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord. And again, "The LORD will judge His people."" (Hebrews 10:30)

Remember - "and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ." (2 Thessalonians 1:7-8)

Do you want "rest" or the "vengeance" of the Lord?

Obey the Lord today

False Teachers Will Be Judged

Written with love by Betty Strickland

" By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber. For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment;" (2 Peter 2:3-4).

In the beginning of this chapter, we learn Peter is warning about false teachers, "But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction." (2 Peter 2:1).

I chose the KJV for this verse because of the word "damnable," which seems to bring it down to a more severe wording than "destructive" in the NKJV. I can not think of anyone who would want to be included in the group of being "damnable." This verse tells us there will be false teachers among us. All we have to do is listen to the radio or watch a TV religious program to be able to see this in practice.

The first part of verse 3 tell us the reason these false teachers teach the way they do - "covetousness" (making money).  IF they teach as the Bible teaches, they will not have as big of a following as they do; therefore, will not have the most money coming in. People have never wanted to hear the guidelines as God set forth and do not want to hear it even today. God has allowed this practice (from the beginning of time) to continue, but has NOT changed His mind about the end thereof (if un-repented). Peter states, "Their destruction does not slumber."

Now, we learn in verse 4 about the angels that sinned and were cast into hell, reserved in chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment.  Jude also states this - "And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day;" (Jude 1:6).

In Luke 8:31 we learn of "Legion", who begs the Lord NOT to send him into the "abyss", when He expels him from the demon possessed man in Gadarenes. So, the demons know of this place and did not want to be there; and I dare say, neither do we!

Think about following these sinful angels, false prophets and false teachers. Remember, darkness is the absence of light; and our responsibility is to follow the "true Light" - John 3:19-21 "And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God."

Just imagine being in eternity, being separated from God and with all the evil that has ever been on earth or cast out of heaven? "Behold, the LORD's hand is not shortened, That it cannot save; Nor His ear heavy, That it cannot hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear." (Isaiah 59:1-2)

I have heard some say "I'm not going to church with all those hypocrites." Well, friends and sisters, it is your choice, either worship here on earth with them or spend eternity with them in hell.

Isaiah 55:6-9 "Seek the LORD while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake his way, And the unrighteous man his thoughts; Let him return to the LORD, And He will have mercy on him; And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon. "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways," says the LORD. "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts."

Beware, false teachers!

Peter Reminds Us of the Days of Noah

Written with love by Betty Strickland

"And did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly;" (2 Peter 2:5).

After 10 generations, albeit, they certainly lived much longer than men today from Adam to Noah, the world had gotten so terrible, God was sorry He had even made man. I sometime wonder, when reading the news or watching it on TV, just how bad was it then, considering the way human beings are today. We are very fortunate that our God is longsuffering (or not?).

Let us look at some scripture that describes this: "Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually." So the LORD said, "I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them."  But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD." (Genesis 6:5,7-8) One man and his family - eight souls...

"The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.  So God looked upon the earth, and indeed it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth."  (Genesis 6:11-12)

Only Noah, his wife and his sons - Shem, Ham and Japheth - with their wives were found in all the earth to be righteous. He gave Noah instructions of what and how to build the ark. Can you imagine the faith Noah had to embark on a job this enormous? God gave him the exact measurements, the exact wood to use, where to put the door and window, how many floors or decks.  He had no power tools as men have today. And in Genesis 6:22 it states that Noah did exactly as God instructed.

"Then the LORD said to Noah, “Come into the ark, you and all your household, because I have seen that you are righteous before Me in this generation."  (Genesis 7:1)

God then told Noah just how many animals of the clean and unclean to bring on board the ark "You shall take with you seven each of every clean animal, a male and his female; two each of animals that are unclean, a male and his female;  also seven each of birds of the air, male and female, to keep the species alive on the face of all the earth". (Genesis 7:2-3)

Peter tells us that Noah was a "preacher of righteousness". (2 Peter 2:5) So for the 120 years it took Noah and his sons to build this ark, he was also preaching to his extended family and friends to no avail; and we get frustrated trying to teach someone the gospel of Christ.

If Noah and his family had not obeyed God (faith in action), they certainly would not have survived but would have perished along with the rest of the world at that time.

"So He destroyed all living things which were on the face of the ground: both man and cattle, creeping thing and bird of the air. They were destroyed from the earth. Only Noah and those who were with him in the ark remained alive." (Genesis 7:23)

We have a "spiritual ark" today, the church; and just like Noah, we have to obey God's way to enter this church and a way to build this church. And, just like Noah, there is only one way.

"Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." (John 14:6)

Hear the truth - Romans 10:17; Believe - Hebrews 11:6; Repent - Acts 2:38; be baptized into Christ - Galatians 3:27 - "For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ" and live faithfully until the end -  (Matthew 10:22, Matthew 28:20).

I pray we will never be so arrogant to believe that God did not say what He meant and mean what He said... Christ is coming again to receive His own in the air and taking vengeance on those that do not obey Him. "In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:" (2 Thessalonians 1:8)

THE TWO VISITORS

By Kathy Scott

"My brethren, do not hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with partiality. For if there should come into your assembly a man with gold rings, in fine apparel, and there should also come in a poor man in filthy clothes, and you pay attention to the one wearing the fine clothes and say to him, "You sit here in a good place," and say to the poor man, "You stand there," or, "Sit here at my footstool," have you not shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?

Listen, my beloved brethren: Has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him? But you have dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you and drag you into the courts? Do they not blaspheme that noble name by which you are called?

If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself," you do well; but if you show partiality, you commit sin, and are convicted by the law as transgressors. For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all." (James 2:1-10)

The first visitor comes in and everyone hopes he will not sit next to them. He has to go up front to sit because all the back rows are full. How embarrassing! From the way he is dressed, in simple clothes and sandals, it is obvious he's poor - and probably homeless, as well. Everybody hopes the second man who comes in will not notice the first one or think he's a member here. It's obvious the second guest is well off. After all, he's driving a brand new car and wearing a very nice suit and tie. Hopefully, he will also contribute a lot in the collection plate. That poor, homeless guy who walked in off the street surely won't give anything. He's most likely here just looking for a handout, anyway. The properly dressed guest is asked to lead closing prayer. Better to not ask the other one since he doesn't even wear a tie. After the last "amen" everyone is quick to greet the well dressed guest, telling him, "Please, come back soon." As for the visitor with sandals, the people hope that maybe he will just slip away and never come back again. Then:

The first visitor is heard to say, as he exits the building, "I am not a visitor. I am here for every service." He is then seen shaking the dust from His feet and mentioning His name, JESUS.

When a stranger comes into our midst, we should remember the words in the song, "Tell me the story of Jesus ...homeless, rejected and poor..." Our Saviour wants greeters, encouragers and soul winners. Please consider a few other words about that Stranger standing at the door in: Isaiah 53; Luke 9:58 and Matthew 10:14-15.

A Christian Wife is not Passive/Aggressive

By June Smith

"Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies. The heart of her husband safely trusts her; so he will have no lack of gain. She does him good and not evil all the days of her life." Proverbs 31:10-12

As I began to think about the title of this article, "A Christian wife is not Passive/ Aggressive," I tried to think of women from the Bible who were either passive or aggressive. The woman that came to my mind as an example of a passive wife was Job's wife. Poor Job had lost twelve children, his wealth, his friends had accused him of sinning and he was plagued with boils. His wife said, ". . . curse God and die!" Job 2:9 (KJV) Her attitude is not an example of a woman of compassion or concern.

Christian women should exhibit the same kindness and tenderheartedness toward their husbands as they would to anyone else. We understand that we are to speak things that edify and build up our brethren including husbands. Romans 14:19, "Let us therefore follow after the things that make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another." (KJV)

Wives who show respect to their husbands can expect to be respected in return. Luke 6:31, "And as ye would that men should do to you do ye also to them likewise." (KJV) Do you want your husband to treat you with respect? Then you must treat him with respect. Can you imagine a wife who would prepare her husband's favorite meal and intentionally put too much pepper in it to make her husband pay for some imagined or real slight? Such treatment would be a sign of immaturity and a lack of true love. We read in I Corinthians 13:4-5 "Love suffereth long, and is kind ; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;" A godly Christian woman does not plot against her husband to get even or to get her own way.

When one thinks of an aggressive woman from scripture, Jezebel comes to mind quickly.

That aggressive woman threatened the life of the prophet Elijah. On another occasion when her husband Ahab wanted a vineyard, she aggressively schemed to get it. Her plotting included the death of the rightful owner. She was a merciless, self-seeking woman and her name has become a byword for all that is detestable and undesirable in womanhood. God has, in His wisdom, set the order of the home. Ephesians 5:22 says, "Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord." (KJV) Worldly wisdom says, "Have it your way." Jezebel had it her way and eventually died a horrible death.

God has given women a role different from men and yet it is a place of honor. Ephesians 5:25 says, "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her."  A godly husband loves his wife as he loves himself. We want to be loved by our men as they love themselves. As a man looks after and meets his own needs, he should also do the same for his wife. He should even be ready to lay down his life for her as Christ laid down his life for the church. We certainly should not ruin a relationship like that by being demanding or aggressive.

There is one last woman in the Bible that I would like for us to consider. She was neither passive nor aggressive. She wisely did good for her husband and not evil even though scripture calls her husband a fool. The woman that I am speaking of is Abigail, the wife of Nabal. David and his men had protected Nabal and under their protection he had lost none of his sheep to the enemy. David sent a request of Nabal asking for food for his men. Nabal was insolent and refused David's request. David was angered and was about to avenge this insult from Nabal by taking Nabal's life. Abigail heard of her husband's rude behavior toward David. She knew of David's intent to harm her husband. She quickly gathered up supplies and gifts and rushed to meet David on his way to harm Nabal. She fell at David's feet and begged him to be patient with her husband. She reminded David that God was the avenger of the wicked. She was received favorably by David. Her tact and wisdom saved her ungrateful husband and it prevented David from an act of rage. Now this is a lady that we want to imitate. Even if we are not in the best of marriages, it serves us well to do good to our husbands and not evil. If we do not return evil for evil we can expect God to bless us as He did Abigail.

A virtuous wife's worth is far above money. Her husband can trust her; so he will not suffer loss. She does him good and not evil for a lifetime. Let's remember that ladies, lets do good for our men. Let's truly love our husbands.

Heirs According to The Hope

Written with love by - Betty Strickland

We have all probably read stories or seen movies where folk are arguing and bickering over "who gets what at the death of a family member". Some may have even been in this type of situation. Well, here is one inheritance you do not have to argue over or go to court to receive. That is not to say you just sit back and say "Bring it to me, Lord, I deserve it." Never, never in a thousand years could we deserve the promise of eternal life. So, just how or why do we receive this inheritance?

*Because God loves us -

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)

*By the grace of our Father in heaven.

"Justified by His grace" from our text.

"And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!" " (Galatians 4:6)

"Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ." (Galatians 4:7)

*We must be "in Christ for that is where all spiritual blessings are found, including "our inheritance according to the Hope."

"For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ." (Galatians 3:27).

*We are no longer in the "bondage of sin."

"knowing this, that our old man was crucified with [him], that the body of sin might be done away, that so we should no longer be in bondage to sin;" (Romans 6:6 ASV). Jesus came and suffered on this earth that we may have 'life' more abundantly. "The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly." (John 10:10) And that life is "eternal life in heaven." "and this is the promise that He has promised us--eternal life." (I John 2:25)

*We must store up a "good foundation" to be able to lay hold on eternal life.

"storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life." (1 Timothy 6:19)

*No matter what we face on this earth, it can never compare to the life promised to the "heirs with Christ."

"For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us." (Romans 8:18)

*Do not forget, this life is passing away -

"And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever." (1 John 2:17)

Life on earth is but for a little while -

"whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away." (James 4:14).

What then....

*We have not received our "inheritance of eternal life" therefore, it is still HOPE.

"But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves." (James 1:22)

*So how do I become an heir with Christ?

Hear and believe the gospel -

"So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Roman 10:17) "But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him." (Hebrews 11:6)

Repent of sins -

"Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."" (Acts 2:38)

Confess Christ as the Son of God -

"Then Philip said, "If you believe with all your heart, you may." And he answered and said, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God."" (Acts 8:37)

Be baptized into Christ -

"For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ." (Galatians 3:27)

The Lord adds us to the church -

"praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved." (Acts 2:47)

Remain faithful til death -

"Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life." (Revelation 2:10)

*Lay hold on your inheritance of hope by obeying our Lord and Savior. Be at peace with God.

Be Kind to Your Husband

By Amy Brown

Love suffers long and is kind; (I Cor 13:4a)

Think about the people you interact with on a daily basis. Whether it is at church, in the neighborhood or elsewhere in the community, you probably make an effort to be kind to the different people you encounter. We often put our "best foot forward" in these situations, but what about the people we are closest to? More specifically, what about the man with whom we entered into the marriage covenant?  You most likely see him every day but may not be nearly as sweet and kind to him as you are to the mailman! I know I have fallen into this trap before and taken out frustrations born of an entirely different situation on the very man I vowed to love, honor and obey.

What does it mean to be kind? One source defines the word as having, showing or proceeding from benevolence; helpful, humane, considerate, mild, gentle. Galatians 5:22 lists kindness as one of the fruits of the Spirit; and in the book of Proverbs, much is said of the "worthy woman" and some of the ways she shows kindness to her husband.

She does him good and not evil all the days of her life. Prov 31:12

She opens her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness. Prov 31:26

She watches over the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness. Prov 31:27

As Christians, we know we are to be kind to ALL men:

Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; Col 3:12

Ladies, this includes your husbands! Not only does it include them when they are present, it also applies when they are away from your presence. I have been so disappointed in times past at the things I have heard Christian women say about their husbands. Criticism and bitterness laced their remarks, and often their husbands were made the butt of jokes. This kind of conversation has no place among us, and we should continually be seeking to build up and encourage our husbands. I am sure if you asked these women, most of them would say that they loved their husbands. However, we know from scripture what true love really is, don't we?

Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; 1 Cor 13:4-5

Kindness is the second characteristic listed, and one could make a case that the rest of the characteristics are part of being kind. We should strive to be an example in ALL we do so that others may say of us:

The heart of her husband safely trusts her; so he will have no lack of gain. Prov 31:11

The Modest Wardrobe

by Dena Ivie

"In like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works" (1 Timothy 2:9-10).

There seems to be no concern for modest apparel in today’s world, and this lack of concern for modesty has filtered into the church. Does this command in 1 Timothy 2:9-10 not apply to women today?

In James 1:17 we are given insight into the nature of God the Father, "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning."  Did you take note? There is no variation or shadow of turning with the Father! From that one verse, Christians must realize that any command in the New Testament is to be obeyed today!

Many women argue that modesty is something decided by each individual. Yet even the dictionary defines modest as "observing the proprieties of dress and behavior; decent." God has given to us the ability to think and reason; thus, we are able to discern what is decent according to God. The Bible gives us all we need to know in order to understand decency in appearance and in behavior. Note the aspect of behavior needing to be modest, as well as one’s appearance.

Other women use the excuse: "that’s the only clothing being sold today and everyone is wearing it, so it must be considered proper now." Do you really think that excuse will stand before God? Look at what Jesus said "And He said to them, you are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God." (Luke 16:15) Are you willing to become an abomination in God’s sight in order to be highly esteemed by the standards of the world?

Women say they are not able to find modest clothing in the stores. Yes, some stores no longer sell much decent clothing. It may take looking a bit longer, but it is possible to buy decent clothing. Some also express the idea that modest clothing is "too expensive." However, I have found just the opposite; modest clothing is not as expensive as the "latest styles of immodesty."

Older women often are deceived by the idea, "No one looks at older women, so it really doesn’t matter what we wear. Just go for comfort." There is no truth to that idea. All women, regardless of age, are noticed by others. But more important, all are noticed by God and are responsible for obedience to His word.

Attitude controls what appearance and behavior we display. Women desiring to truly please God are willing to be more careful about what is or is not "on display" with each item of clothing worn. (Here’s a helpful hint: stand before a mirror, full length, if possible, and look at top, bottom, sides, and all points between. Turn, twist, bend over, raise, and lower your arms, eyeing yourself from all angles. You may realize you are displaying more than you thought! Sit in a chair in front of the mirror, crossing and uncrossing your legs and note what is seen. Observe carefully every item of clothing you put on.) In Proverbs 27:19, we are told, "As in water face reflects face, so a man's heart reveals the man." Again, note Proverbs 11:20, "Those who are of a perverse heart are an abomination to the LORD, But the blameless in their ways are His delight."

If we desire to be pleasing to God and glorify Him, we will gladly maintain a "Modest Wardrobe!"

O You of Little Faith

By Denise Chaffin

"But He said to them, "Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?" Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm" (Matt. 8:26).

"You rule the raging of the sea; when its waves rise, You still them" (Ps.89:9).

We sometimes ridicule, or at least question, the disciple's lack of trust in Jesus when we read this incident. But how often do we say we trust in God and then lack the ability to truly demonstrate that trust in our everyday lives? We all know that actions speak louder than words, and words are easy to come by. Jesus' disciples were in the same boat, so to speak, as we are today. Oh, we think we would have understood and believed much quicker; but remember, they had been waiting for the Messiah for hundreds of years. Many men had come, saying they were the Christ, and had proven themselves false in the end. I think they sensed something different in Jesus but did not really understand the nature of the kingdom he preached. They were still thinking in human terms.

Don't we have the same trouble today? We know the King. We believe His word, but we do not fully understand the nature of that kingdom He teaches in His word. We know the physical world and its cause and effect. We are distracted by the cares and troubles of this life. We think that if we live 'just right', life (or our brothers and sisters) should not treat us this way! Our lives become more and more unsettled. We grow despondent. We grasp at medicines, doctor visits, massages, meditation, thinking, "This just isn't working! My life is more a mess every day!" But in the end, it is Christ who is the one who cares. The remedies of this world, while they may help for a while, end up complicating it rather than helping.

We have lost our spiritual focus. We forget who is Lord and master of the universe. We think we can control it; and when things spin out of control, we cry for help. Who is best able to calm the racing heart and the whirling emotions but the one who created them?

A heartbreaking story was related to me recently. A young man, a member of the Lord's body, was sent to Iraq. In a terrible accident, he and two others were wounded, the two mortally. In the chaos that followed, he and one of the other soldiers were misidentified; and he was sent to a hospital under the other man's identity, while his own family was told he perished. He was mourned, they had a memorial service, and all his family and friends began to settle the thought of life without him. Some time later, when he was well enough to have bandages removed and speak their error was discovered. It was a terrible tragedy, with two families left to wonder how such a thing could happen. Every precaution is taken to avoid just such terrible mix-ups. But they sometimes happen anyway.

Unfortunately, instead of the one family thanking God their son was spared and moving on, they grew angry and wondered how He could so cruelly leave them to think their son dead for so long. Instead of embracing their son and turning their situation into an opportunity to share the grief of others in a real way, they turned on the one who, in their minds, had allowed this. Now, certainly God could have intervened and changed everything. But He let the course of human events take place, and human error and chaos of war took their toll. Instead of reliance on God, bitterness, anger, and darkened souls resulted.

In the following passage I believe is the key to letting God's power and majesty reign in our lives. We are human and frail, we doubt and wonder how things happen the way they do; but this man had the right attitude that Mark records in chapter 9 verse 24, "And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief." (KJV) When we are at the end of our rope and unable to trust, that is when we truly must rely on God. When the road ahead is dark and uncertain, when the load seems more than we can bear, we can cry with that father of long ago, "Lord, I believe! Help my unbelief." (Mark 9:24 NKJV)

LAY UP TREASURES IN HEAVEN

By Betty Kimbro

"But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal." (Matthew 6:20)

To lay up means to put or place, or hide, store or save something.

Matthew 6:19 states, "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal".

What are "treasures"? Something of great value, riches, jewels or purchased possessions. These are earthly treasurers. Our scripture today is taken from the Sermon on the Mount, which is located at the northwestern end of the Sea of Galilee near Capernaum. It is a beautiful, quiet place overlooking the Sea. Having been there, I can see how thousands of people could have seen and heard our dear Lord as He spoke to them.

Jesus sat on the hillside watching all the people as He taught them. (To read the beautiful sermon, go to Matthew 5 thru 7.) He begins with 11 verses of "Blessed are...." and continues on telling how we should live our lives.

Our thoughts today are about "laying up for ourselves treasurers in Heaven". We know Jesus was not speaking of material things, because we take nothing with us to heaven.

In  Luke 12, Jesus was speaking to a multitude when someone called out for Jesus to tell his brother to divide the inheritance with him. Jesus said, "Who made me judge over you? Take heed and beware of covetousness.” Then He spoke this parable in Luke 12:16-21, "The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully.  And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’  So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods.  And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.”’  But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’ “So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”"

In this parable, we see that earthly treasures we horde can never get us to heaven.

The disciples asked Him to explain the parables to them that He had spoken to the people. In Matthew 13:44-48 Jesus says: "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls,  who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it. “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet that was cast into the sea and gathered some of every kind,  which, when it was full, they drew to shore; and they sat down and gathered the good into vessels, but threw the bad away."

Then He closes with Matthew 13:49-50, "So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come forth, separate the wicked from among the just, 50 and cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.”

We do not want to be cast into the fiery furnace. We must live our life as Christ did, in Christian love, seeking to help others, praying for the lost and our leaders, praying for the sick and helping when we can. Studying daily our Bible and reading to our children from the Bible is extremely important. We must endeavor to be kind and considerate, showing others our love for Christ, attending services regularly, being cheerful and happy, praising God for all that we have, especially to our own children.

Children learn by what they see and hear daily in their young lives. Jesus is always there for us in every situation and will help us to live as we should. These are all treasurers we can 'lay up in Heaven'.

In Matthew 19:16, a young man came to Jesus asking, "What good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?” Jesus tells him to keep the Commandments. (This is before Jesus died on the cross, so the O.T. commandments were still in force). The young man said he had kept them from his youth. In Matthew 19:21, Jesus said, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasur in heaven, and come, Follow Me.” But the young man went away sorrowful, because he had great possessions.

How very sad! Here Jesus, Himself, is telling him what he must do; and he could not give up his possessions.

We are to spend our life, here on earth, serving others so that we can store up treasurers in Heaven for ourselves and be ready to hear the most wonderful words we will ever hear!

Well done, good and faithful servant.

Enter into the joy of your Lord.

The Lord is not slack Concerning His Promise

By Edy Cozort

Throughout Scriptures, one of the main themes portrayed over and over again is that God is faithful.

In 2 Peter 3:9, Peter reaffirmed this for the First Century Christians, as well as any Christian who would ever read his epistle. He wrote, "But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." This promise of which Peter speaks about is that the Lord will return one day to claim His own (John 14:1-3). What an amazing promise from the Lord!

Let us notice a few things concerning these encouraging verses and God's promise. First, the Lord is not bound by time. God, being outside of time, does not have any time constraints on what He chooses to do. This is one of the ways He is able to know the beginning from the end (Isaiah 46:9-10). You might ask, "Why is this important?" It is important because it helps us to understand that God knows when the right time will be for the Lord to return.

Speaking of His return, Jesus said, "But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only" (Matthew 24:36). Just as God knew when the fullness of time had come to send Christ into the world (Galatians 4:4), He will send Christ back when it is time.

Second, God does not take His promises lightly! Notice that Peter said God is "not slack" concerning His promise. "Slack" in the Greek means "to delay, tarry." Thayer's definition says "to delay, to render slowly, to be long, to tarry, loiter." This fits right in with the point made before concerning God sending Christ back at the appropriate time. We should not be concerned over when God will fulfill His promise, but instead be prepared for that great day.

Great comfort should also be found in the multiple examples of God fulfilling His promises. Examples include: the Seed and Land Promise to Abraham (Genesis 17:7-8); the promise to David that his kingdom would be established forever (2 Samuel 7:12-13); the promise to protect and care for the children of Israel, as long as they remained faithful (Leviticus 26); Jesus' promise to establish His church (Matthew 16:18); the promise of the gospel being taken to the Gentiles (John 10:16) and many other promises. God is a wonderful example of how we should keep the promises we make.

Jesus said, "But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil" (Matthew 5:37). James reiterated this when he wrote, "But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation" (James 5:12). We should all take caution that we do not speak false promises but, instead, keep our promises.

Third, God does not desire for any soul to be lost eternally. We must keep in mind that even though God is longsuffering, there will come a time when His patience with mankind will run out; and Christ will be sent to claim the faithful. Since God does not want any soul to be lost but to come to repentance, He has given man a plan to follow in order to be saved. It is because of God's goodness and His love that this has been made possible (Romans 2:4; John 3:16) . As we journey through this life, may we always look to these words in 2 Peter, as well as other scriptures, to help us keep our focus on the promise of Christ's return.

YOU WERE CREATED TO BE HIS HELP MEET

"And the Lord God said, It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him" (Gen 2:18).

When God had finished all the works of his creation, He surveyed everything and pronounced them "good."  However, when he considered the man whom he had made, he found that it was not good for him to be alone.  Therefore he created woman as a help "meet" for Adam.  From creation woman's role was ordained, and in this role, she should find fulfillment.

The literal definition of the term help meet uses a noun "help" and an adjective for "meet," meaning suited.  It is a Hebrew word taken from # 5826, meaning to surround and may be compared with God as helper (Psa. 121:1-2).  In almost every way, woman's nature is a complement to that of man.  Without her, the world would be like Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen. 19:4-5; Judges 19:22; 1 Tim 5:14).  While the husband is earning the living, someone, who cares for the husband, the children and the house, needs to guide the house.  Both the husband and the children need her tender loving care to be complete physically, emotionally and intellectually (Titus 2:4).

The literal definition of the word woman means "taken from man" (Gen. 2:23).  Even this fact of creation should preview the marriage relationship.  "THEREFORE (because of this) shall a man leave his father and his mother and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh" (Gen 2:24).  The very emphatic statement that follows should give all the reason anyone would need for teaching against divorce.  "What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder" (Gen. 2:24; Matt. 19:4-6).

Warnings from the book of Nahum
by June Smith

The book of Nahum in the Old Testament is placed by some in a grouping called the minor prophets. The prophecy revealed in this book is about the coming destruction of Nineveh, the capital of the mighty Assyrian empire. In Nahum 3:1 the city of Nineveh is described as a city of murderers. It is also called a city of lies. The description of Nineveh reminds us of  John 8:44,  "You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it."

The book of Nahum reveals three characteristics of God. First of all, in chapter 1 verses 2-3b, we are told of God's wrath. God is a God of justice. When justice does not prevail it angers him, but he is slow to anger and very patient. Nahum 1:2-3b, "God is jealous, and the LORD avenges;
The LORD avenges and is furious. The LORD will take vengeance on His adversaries, And He reserves wrath for His enemies; The LORD is slow to anger and great in power, And will not at all acquit the wicked."

Next, we are told that God is a God of great power in chapter 1 verses 3b-6. He has control over the land and sea. God is mighty and he can do whatever he chooses. No one can stand against his powers.
Nahum 1:3b-6, " In the whirlwind and in the storm, And the clouds are the dust of His feet. He rebukes the sea and makes it dry, And dries up all the rivers. Bashan and Carmel wither, And the flower of Lebanon wilts. The mountains quake before Him, The hills melt, And the earth heaves at His presence, Yes, the world and all who dwell in it. Who can stand before His indignation? And who can endure the fierceness of His anger? His fury is poured out like fire, And the rocks are thrown down by Him."

The third attribute that we see is God's goodness. His justice is tempered with mercy, as shown in chapter 1:7. For those who trust in him, even though there is evil around them, if they will be faithful to God, he will reward them. We must not make the mistake of thinking that goodness is the only attribute of God. For those who are living an obedient life, there is the blessing of knowing that God is our refuge, our place of safety and protection. Nahum 1:7, "The LORD is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble; And He knows those who trust in Him."

The scripture says in Hosea 4:6, "My people destroyed for lack of knowledge". (Hebrews 3:15-19) We have to get back to speaking and teaching the basic teachings of the Bible and making sure that people know the truth so that they will not be pulled away by Satan, who is described as a angel (or messenger) of light. II Corinthians 11:14, "And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light."

We have to be careful about judging the motives of others, but we also have to let the Bible be the judge when it comes to matters of doctrine and church worship. There are teachers and preachers that teach a message that sounds good. They preach a "cheap grace". They have forgotten that God is also a God of wrath and power, and he expects obedience. Even some who were once preachers of the truth have accepted the idea that God is such a loving God that he will be tolerant and accepting of all and that it does not matter what you do or teach. When we look at the book of Nahum, we see that God is a God of wrath, a God of power and a God of goodness.

As we look back into the Old Testament, we see the children of Israel as they were wondering in the desert after leaving the bondage of Egypt. They were struggling to learn God's ways. Only two of the original adults were allowed to enter the "promised land" because of disobedience. (Hebrews 3:15-19)  It is a sad thing to consider that so many were lost because they would not listen to God and obey. It is a reminder to us that the same God expects us to listen to Him and to obey Him today. We must diligently study to show ourselves approved unto God. (2 Timothy 2:15 [KJV]) We must also remember that we show our love to God by obeying His commands. John 14:15, " If you love Me, keep My commandments."  1 John 5:3 (KJV), "For this is the love of God , that we keep his commandments; and his commandments are not grievous."

The Book of Nahum
by June Smith

The book of Nahum says it well,
Words of wisdom for some who clearly fell.
God is a God of wrath and a God of good.
Guard your hearts and minds as you should.

Do not be fooled by men who say,
God loves all and looks the other way.
He is a God of vengeance it does say,
and those who fail will surely pay.

His strength and power we can truly see,
from the things he can do on earth and on the sea.
Warning is given to all on this terrestrial ball,
Instruction is given clearly to us all.

Repent and walk in all his ways
And it will lengthen all our days.
We must listen and take heed
We can not stand against His mighty deeds.

God Is In Control

From the history of the world is seen:
The rulers of the land -
The great, the small, the basest sort -
They're water in Your hand.

That they by You are lifted up,
And they by You are risen
From base plebeian to emperor,
Or thrown from throne to prison.

"We the people!" Cry they all -
Oh foolish citizens!
They won't believe You rule the world,
And not some faulty men!

Our prayers to You we've offered now,
That You would show the lot.
Because You set up whom You will,
To You now have we sought.

Whoever then You bring to power,
Please guide him by Your light,
And turn his heart to judge in ways
That vindicate the right.

But whom You choose will be Your will;
I trust Your greater plan;
Your kingdom isn't one that's seen,
Or ruled by carnal man.

Before You stretched the heavens out,
Or laid the earth's foundation,
You'd drawn up Your eternal plan
For what would be Your nation.

And all the things You've brought to pass,
That man has seen since then,Are part of that great purpose that
We're now partakers in.

America! In can't be mine -
My home, nor yet my love;
The only country I am of
Is that great home above.

Please Father, choose a righteous king,
So we won't live in fear,
But make us to remember that
Our kingdom isn't here.
In Jesus' name.

Written by Kara Glott

Kara's dear grand mother sent this poem to me and I wrote asking for permission to publish it, below is what Kara wrote  explaining her inspiration for the poem.  Such in-sight from one so young is surely a tribute to godly parents.  May God bless this young lady and protect her from the evils of this life.  Thank you, Kara for sharing your gift.

These were the ones I had specifically in mind as I wrote it:

Daniel 4:17...that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.

Eph 1:9 Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:
Eph 1:10 That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:
Eph 1:11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:

Prov 21:1 The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.

Rom 13:1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

Heb 11:13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
Heb 11:14 For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.
Heb 11:15 And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.
Heb 11:16 But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.

1 Pet 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
1 Pet 2:10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

I don't know if you will want to attach all those; perhaps the lady wouldn't want them all. They are a comfort though! I've found myself surprised at how many people don't believe that the governments are in God's control. It's so neat to read the Old Testament though, and even to read secular history, and see so clearly how God put everything in just the right place at just the right time. Even the "bad" governments were part of His work with His people. Even if He gives us another Nero, we can take comfort that "1 Cor 15:25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet." The thought has crossed my mind lately that we wrestle not with flesh and blood, and everyone will be judged according to their deeds on judgement day. Thinking about it from that angle, and understanding that even wicked people have a heart and mind and soul like we do, it makes it easier to love our enemies, and feel sorry for them rather than feeling angry at them or as though we are physically fighting them
